“A NIGHT IN HONOLULU”
COMING TO THE GRAND
Anew play of Hawaii, by Howard
McKent Barnes, is tbld in three acts.
A beautiful Hawaiian girl, deserted by
her lover, an Englishman, in a spirit
of revenge substitutes the child of
his white wife for that of her own
which has died and rears her as a na
tive. She is afterwards known as
“Kalama,” and dancing girl of Hawaii.
She is sought after by the white peo
ple, flattered and favored by them,
but when her heatr goes out to a
white man and the sentiment is recip
rocated, the old fateful barrier stands
in the way; the inter-mingling of the
race is confronted. How the author
works out this situation is most ab
sorbingly’ told in ‘‘A Night in Honolu
lu”. w’hich is to be seen at the Grand
an Monday, Jan.- 2. Prices 55c to
$1.65. Seats at Andrews’ Thursdav.
RAY STUDIOS FAN MAIL FOR
TIPS AS TO AUDIENCE'S WISHES
“To knew that 1 have provoked one
kindly feeling, or moved one jaded re
viewer to honest tears, Is something
of an inspiration.”
That one sentence epitomizes the
aims and ambitions of Charles Ray,
motion picture star.
Pictures of the people and foi the
people—that is the principle on which
Ray is proceeding, and succeeding.
Not for him the “machine-made” film;
not for him the story of illicit love in
the realms >of mythical “high society.”
Every Ray production is plausible and
intensely Interesting to the movie pub
lic because it depicts the life of the
great majority of Americans —the de
cent, home-loving citizens.
It is to this class that Ray tries to
appeal, not because of a belief that it
!a good businles alone, hut main’lv
because he wants to produce clean
pictures—pictures of real life and of
real persons.
