HOLE ON ROADSIDE
Joe Baker, Colored, Goes in
Bathing With Several Others,
and Loses Life Before Could
be Reached.
Joe Bgker, well known negro, of
Everett City, lost his life by drowning
near that place yesterday afternoon
while in bathing. Coroner Baldwin
investigated the tragedy, but as there
were a number of witnesses to the af
fair there was no inquest held.
Aecording'to the statements of wit
nesses, Baker, and a number of other
men went in bathing in a , large ditch
on the side of the public road near
Everett Clity, the excavation having
been - made in the building of the road,
and was filled with water that had
backed up from the Altamaha river.
It is said to be from twelve to fifteen
feet deep in some places. A number
of women gathered on the bank of
the pond to witness the antics of the
bathers, among them being Baker’s
wife.:
The man was heard to cry out for
help, but disappeared beneath the sur
face of the water before any of his
would-be rescuers could reach him.
The wife of Baker is said to have be
come frantic and it required the com
bined strength of several men to re
strain, her jumping into the pond. The
body of the drowned man was recov
ered in a short time and Coroner Bald
win notified.
Bak®' is said to have been an in
dustrious man, owning his own home,
and was highly regarded by both
