STRONG LOVE TYPES l
IN "BLOOD AND SAND”
Two vastly different types of wom
en portray two different types of af
fection in "ISlooil and Sand," Rcdolpb
V-alentinols initinat. Paramount star
picture. Lila Lee, youthful and in
genuous, evinces a love sweet and ten
der. while Nita Naldi, colorful and
exotic, sweeps everything away with
a volcanic, tempestuous rush of ro
mance.
The love of Rodolph Valentino for
these women provides a seril-s of
interesting sequences in the Vicente
Blase,> - Ibanez’s story of Spanish life
which June Mathis has specially ad
apted for the screen. As Mr. Valen
tino has an international reputation
as a perfect, love-maker, the roman
ti episodes bid fair to he even more
popular than file sensational, color
ful periods laid before wild bulls in
tiie Madrid bull ring where “Juan
Galiarotfo” is a famous bull-fighter.
“Blood and Sand” which is a Fred
Xiblo production, will be the big fea
ture at the Bijou Theatre today and
tomorrow.
In dud-* and in the cast are Walter
Long, Leo White, Rose Rosanova
Marie Marstini. Gilbert Clayton,
Charles Blecher, Fred Becker, Jack
Winn. William E. Lawerenoe, George
Periolat and others.
i The latest in “Bringing Up Father”
rerifts, the musical farce based on the
world famous cartoons of George Mc-
Manu.'. will i, P the next attraction
at the Grand Theatre commencing
Wednesday. O toller 25th, with the
customary matinees. R is in three
nets and entitled ‘‘Father on His Va
< cation." From all accounts it is
the last word in fun, com-edy, in
novations, scenic adorment, surprises,
screams and real, unalloyed and up-to
the-minute entertainment. Jiggs Ma
honey, Maggie, and Dinty and the re
mainder of tlie Mahoney clan all will
he seen in the flesh. This in itself
is an assurance that there should
be plenty of dcings in the world or
mirth and gufaw before we mortals
are very much older.

TRAINED WILD ANIMALS
A m CIRCUS FEATURE
Trained wild animai s is a promi
nent feature of the majestic Hagen
beck-Wailace Circus which will ex
hibit here Saturday, Oct. 21 ami it
is reported that thousands of dollars
have been spPnt ip completing- new
acts and presenting to the public as
i founding tricks perfected by the best
I of trainers.
It is said that a large staff is con
tinually employed in South Africa to
capture lions for this circus. The
meaning of .captivity is given the
beast,; ij, their native countiy. They
ar e then brought to the United States,
where it takes years in training these
animals In perform feats. Great dif
foully is experienced in capturing
lions, the management says. One of
the handicaps is when a lion is cap
tured, it is necessary' that its mate be
also taken. Mating seems to be done
for life in tli P jungle, so whe n cap
tured, if the lioness is not also taken,
>t is extremely hard to train the
lion.
But the trained animals and m na
gerie a v e not all that is anneum ed i,
store for the lovers of the tented
snow. New acts and features of ev
ery description have been contract
ed, many of wh eh are declared to be
the best of European offerings.
Then—lc-st it be forgotten—more
than a .sore of funny clowns are an
nounced in comic antics declared a s a
“u'e cure for “blue.” Surprise fol
lowing surprise is promised in the
big free street parade, which i, ; more
than one mil e long.
