NAVY DAY WILL
BE OBSERVED
ON OCTOBER 27
is in Honor of Theodore Koose
velt U. S. S. Toueey
Coming Here
Throughout the country prepara
.ions are made to celebrate the mcm
ry of Theodor® in a fit
ting manner on October 27th, his
irtinlay, which -.lay the navy has se
lected as “Navy Day.”
It is appropriate that the first
Navy day should have the same date
; s Roosevelt's birthday, for a staun
•her friend the navy never had. It
s well at this time to recall some
f Roosevelt’s sentiments as express
d by him in ve.riou speeches cover
ng a number of years from 1!>01 to
1008.
As early at 1901 Roosevelt saw that
the welfare of the United States de
manded an adequate Wavy. “The
work of upbuilding the navy must be
;to:uliiy continued,” he said. ‘‘No
ne point of our policy, foreign or
lomefttlc, is more important than
.Ins to the honor and material wel
fare, and, above all, to the peace of
mr nation in the future. Whether
'.vo desire it or not, wo must hence
forth recognize that we have interna
tional duties no less than interna
tional rights. Eve n if cur flag wore
hauled dcw n n the Philippines and
Puerto Rice, even if we decided not
to build the Isthmian Canal, we
should need a thoroughly trained
ljjvy of adequate size, or else be
prepared to definitely and for al!
iim c to abandon the- idea that our
nation is among those whose soils go
down to sea in ships. Unless our
commerce is to be carried i n foreign
bottoms, we must have war craft to
protect ff”
Emphasizing the ever existing
peace sentiment of the country, he
goe s on to ay, “probably no other
great nation in the world is so anxi
ous for peace a s w P are. There is
not a single civilized power which
has anything- whatever to fear from
aggressiveness on our part. All we
want is peace; and toward thi s end
w-e wish to be able to secure the
same respect for our rights from
others which we are eager and anx : -
ous to extend to their rights in re
turn, to insure fair treatment to us
commercially, and to guarantee the
safety of tbs American people.”
As was announced in The News a
few days ago the U. S. S. Toucoy
has been ordered to Brunswick for
“Navy Day” and will remain in port
for two or three days.
New Features Add To Interest
Of Hagenback-Wallace Circus
Muni and Riding Scene of One
the Most Spectacular Acts
. Of the Exhibition. . ,
With au ideal day, from a vw
standpoint, Hagen heck Wall ace .wit;
a reputation of years standing as tlie
country’s greatest animal circus
played to big crowds yesterday after
noon and last, night. Post-circus tall,
indicated that the crowds were pl< as
ed.
I! agon beck - Wallace introduced
three or four acts that were new to
Brunswick people, jn addition to the
'post elabova'te display of animal acts
in the country. A Mexican stood at
one end of the reserved seat section
with a tpsiueudonty long huclgskin
whip > clipped a newspaper out of th
hand of his woman assistant, who
was standing at th P other end of the
stands. With a small whip, he took
the buttons off a coat she wore. An
other novelties for canvas tops was a
woodchopping contest between two
huskies. Using a 30-inch log, they
first sawed it with a buck saw, then
each took half and they raced through
with axes. This was followed by a
demonstration of axe throwing that
gave the crowd uneasiness.
Hunt and Riding Scene.
Perhaps the most spectacular of
Hagehbeck-Wallace circus ‘this year
is the hunt and riding scene. Red
coated riders on fancy mounts enter
singing the bunt song, preceded by
half a hundred hound dogs baying
and veiping. The dogs are unlashed
as attendants blow horns and the
hunt is on. The culmination of the
stunt is, a high jumping contest be
tween the horsemen and women. At
taboy reputed to be the greatest high
jumping horse in the world, takes a
high hurdle with ease. He was fol
lowed closely by th P greatest broad
jumping horse in the world —if you be
li.eve 'the spijpler —and that’s easy,
once you’ve seen it—who takes a 20-
foot jump over three hurdles. The
riding in Hagnbec.k-Wallace is prob
ably unsurpassed.
The hon act furnished a great
thriller. Seven denizens of the jungle
were turned loose in the tenter cage
w-ith a trainer. One was surely anil
manifested little or no interest in the
act, taking his energy out in snap
ping a the training and springing at
liloi once or twice. The crowd gave
the tamer a big hand on bis work.
There were many other features to
ihe circus. The riding was way above
the average, the aerobatic work was
Rood, the performing seals were on
hand as usual, the trained pigs per
formed to the amusement of all, some
or the acts of the clown were re dly
performance was a good, clean one
and Magenbeek-Wallare added to the
already good reputation they had in
Urunswick.
