MASTERS HARRIS
111 miss JAIL
Negro Who Killed His Wife
Here Last Sunday is Caught
Through Efforts of Chief of
Police Register.
Through the efforts cf Chief of
Police J. E. Register, Masters Harris,
negro who killed his wife out near
the I, street park some time late Sun
day afternoon or early evening, has
been captured and will be brought
back to Brunswick today. He was
taken in Waycross where Chief Reg
ister had advised officers that he
would go after committing the ter
rible murder here.
It will be remembered that Ro
bertha Harris, his wife, a young
woman about twenty year s of age,
was found last Sunday morning with
her throat cut from ear to ear and
while members of a coroner’s jury
did not i-etur n a verdict saying that
the husband had done the killing,
this seemed to be the opinion f all
and especially is this true when Har
ris could not be located, he having
skipped out before the body was
found.
Chief Register tipped off the Way
cross officers and his efforts have
been rewarded by landing a person
charged with one of the worst crimes
ever committed in Brunswick.
HABERSHAM COUNTY HAS
SHIPPED 300 CARS APPLES
Atlanta, Nov. B.—Habersham coun
ty, it was announced here, has ship
ped this year three hundred car
loads of peaches and three hundred
carloads of apples, for which the
growers received one miHion dol
lars. It is stated that the county
has a very limited amount of its till
able land in peaches and apples; in
fact, it is doubted if there i s ten per
cent of the area of Habersham now
represented i n apples and peach or
chards of that county.
State horticulturists here make the
, statement that the pijoducion of
fruit in Haberham and other moun
tain countie s is yet in its infancy.
Just what the industry i n all that
section will be in the years to come
remains to be seen. It is clearly
shown, however, from reports re
ceived at the stat e eapitol, that the
industry will be greatly increased.
The North Georgia apple, growers
believe, will in a few years take
equal rank with Georgia Peaches in
the markets of the world.

Ladies to Sell Poppies on Armis
tice Day—Children’s Book
Week Will Also be Observ
ed in the City.
The Woman’s Club held a most in
teresting meeting yesterday sifter
noon at the Y. W. C. A. hall with a
splendid attendance. Mrs. T. W. Mal
lard, president, presided.
A number of routine matters were
disposed of and numerous communica
tions were read by the secretary.
The club will observe “children’s
book week,’’ as i s done throughout
the state, culminating in a special
program on December 6th, when ev
ery club member is expected to con
tribute one or more books to the
cause. A list of books especially de
sired in the schools here, will be
published at a n early date.
The treasurer reported the club as
being in satisfactory financial condi
tion.
On Armistice Day, the club will
sponsor the sale of Poppies, the pro
ceeds to go to the local American
Legion Post. These little symbols
of “Flanders Field,” may be purchas
ed for as little a s ten cents, but the
good women having the sale in
charge hope for far more than that
from each flower sold. The funds
will be disbursed by the local post
for the benefit of needy ex-soldiers.
At request from Mrs. A. L. Win
ter, president general of the Feder
ated Clubs, asking for figures show
ing the number of club women who
registered and voted on Tuesday,
showed the club as being almost one |
hundred per cent.
Mrs. S. R. Dull, of Atlanta, will i
again conduct a cooking school, un
der the auspices of th fr club, the class
to begin on Monday, November 20,
and lasting a week. All the women
of Brunswick are invited to attend
whether club members or not. The
tickets will be two dollars for the
series of six lessons.
Mrs. J. S. Wright outlined a won
derful civic program for next year
of which department she is chair-
man. The city parks, squares and
streets, have been greatly beautified
under the efficient work of Mrs.
Wright, and with the hoped for help
and co-operation from the city, and
different local organizations, thi s de
partment expects to, do wonderful
work.
The club is to work for the SI,OOO
prize offered by the Pictorial Review,
for the club i n Georgia doing the
greatest amount of community work.
With such a live organization, this
club stands a fine chance of winning
the prize.
A large number of those present
readily agreed to pack and send a
Christmas box to the little fellows at
St. John’s Haven school on St. Si
mon. This is a labor of love, and
a cause in which all of Brunswick
should be interested.,,
Mrs. C. B. Gowen, delegate to the
state conference at Athens, gave a
most interesting and complete report
on the recent convention. The club
will have a refreshment booth at the
Glynn Fair during Thanksgiving
week, who j coffee,, sandwiches and
cold drinks will be sold.

RED CROSS DRIVE
IS ENDORSED BY
AMERICAN LEGION
COMMANDER GOULD EXPRESSES
HIMSELF AND IS STRONGLY
IN FAVOR OF ASSISTING
Mrs. W. S. Nathan, chairman of
the American Red Cross roll call,
has received the following letter from
Commander J. D. Gould, Jr., of the
local post of the American Legion:
“Dear Mrs. Nathan: On the oc
casion of the opening of the annual
Red Cross Roll Call, I feel it a Privi
lege to commend this great Ameri
can institution upon the very essent
ial work it is doing for our whole
country, wherever, and whenever
disaster and human suffering prevail.
. “Particularly do I have a deep feel
ing of gratitude to the Red Cross for
the very necessary and helpful as
sistance that they are daily giving
the ex-service men of our country.
“Because of this organization’s
sincere and whole-hearted cd-opetra
tion, the American Legion has been -
enabled to accomplish much for the
nation’s crippled war veterans that
otherwise would have been impossi
ble.
“In all of our activities for the aid
of the maimed and sick ex-service
men, the Red Cross has borne a
large part of the load, and their work
ers stationed at all of the U. S. vet
erans hospitals have been the means
of brightening and cheering the long
and dreary hours of many of these
ex-soldiers, beshles rendering them
many other needful services.
“When we consider these things,
and realize what a large part the
Red Cross plays in the lives of so
many of our deserving people, it
seems only proper that we should all
support this institution to the ut
most.
“I wish you much succes s in your
efforts for the Red Cross.’’
