Scarcely a house remains stand
ing in Ihe Vallanar valley in
Northern Chile, as the v result of
the earthquakes and marine dis
turbances of last week. The full
extent ot the disaster, which cen
tered upon the provinces of Ata
• cama and Coquimbo, became more

Growing List.
In these two provinces the victims
number 1,500, so far as is now known,
but it is expected Ihe number of dead
will be substantially increased when
communications are resumed with
many small villages in the interior,
whose fate remains unknown.
Dispatches today from
told of serious damage which the
earthquakes inflicted upon the Tono
Mines.
partial law has been declared at
Vallenar and in Copiapo, owing to the
looting which bandits have been per
petrating upon the distressed popula
tion. The bandits are believed for the
most part to be prisoners who escap
ed from the jails.
The removal of debris in the af
flicted regions has been started with
the help of soldiers. Eighty per cent
of the buildings are down and the oth
ers are greatly damaged. Soldiers
arc patrolling the towns by day and
the police by night. The state of
siege is being maintained. •
Many small inland villages near
Copiapo were destroyed. San Fer
nando is in ruins. Twenty-three per
sons were killed there. At the village
of I'ierra Amarilla four persons are
dead and half the town is in ruins.
At San Antonio seven are dead and
the town is a wreck. Casualties so
far reported from Copiapo number
the dead at sixty and the injured at
110. ...
Travelers arriving from Chanarcil
lo, a mining town in the province of
Atacama, say the earthquake was felt
with great intensity. The cor
respondent of the newspaper Mereu
fio, who has arrived at Copiapo, says
that when the earthquake was first
felt there Friday night the eastern
sky was illuminated by an intense red
light in the shape of great flams. This
phenomenon could be seen for a great
distance. The tremors continued in
termittently all night and Saturday
morning. Just before midnight Sun
day another prolonged shock was felt
and it was repeated intermittently un
til daybreak Monday.
During the tremors young girls at
a convent jumped out" of the windows.
Many of them wree seriously injured
when the second floor sagged down.
The hospital and prison at Copiapo
arc bi ruins but the prisoners and the
sick escaped. Prisoners guilty of
slight offenses were freed by the au
thorities. Seven criminals broke jail.
Latest reports from the town of
Vallenar place the number of both
killed and injured there at 1,300. It
is believed the total killed and injur
ed in the Villenar valley will reach
1,500.
