The Salvation Army has Put out its
Christmas boxes and it is hoped that
no smaii amount will be derived from
this source. Cspt. L. T. Shifflett is
doing t reat work for the poor of the
city, anil at the present time is tax
ing his brains for a solution to his
problem of meet ing the enormous de
mands made upon him by the desti
tute and the needy.
Christmas is not far off, the spir
it is in the air. Parents are worry
ing their minds as to what to pre
sent their children vfith as to
draw gleeful expressions of joy from
the young folks; but did ever a one
jof you think of those Poor children

| dimmed, but who will doubtless be
disappointed unless funds are raised

The big seagoing dredge of the
government, the Savannajt, has re
turned from Jacksonville where it
went last week for slight repairs and
] has already started work here. The
craft will be here for something like
nine mounths and will be engaged on
the inner harbor as well as the outer
bar. On the latter the plans ‘‘all foi
obtaining thirty feet of water while
inside the bumps will be removed.
It is expected that the craft will
be kept busy here for a period of
nine months, if not more, but when
the work is finished there will he few
Ports, north or south, that can com
pare with this one.
GOLF TOURNAMENT

The South Atlantic Coif Associa
tion wishes to announce that it will
hold its first semi-annual tournament

part of March.

nament would be held the middle of
January but due to the prolonged
drought the officials of the associa

Atlanta, Ga., Dec. T.— the
' gratifying features of the present
business situation in Georgia and the
South is that the farmer is getting
something like a fair return for h,s
labor and investment, according to
officials of the Georgia Department
of Agriculture.
Usually it is the farmer who loses,
as pointed out by Commissioner of
Viniculture J. -T. Brown. If he makes
good crops the prices of the things
he produces are mysteriously kept
down, although demand may be as
great as ever. If he makes a poor
crop, conditions in other lines of in
dustry generally contribute to keep
prices of farm products from rising,
and the farmer gets the short end of
