Of this period No n his life there is no record. only know that he passed the hirst milestone on the road to fame it the age of twenty, by going to Boston. In the next five years lie had mastered every detail and made some effective improvements of his own. But it was on April 15, 1823, in a tiny workroom on Co m m o n Street, Boston,, that he established himself with James Stewart, a Scotchman, and thus the House of Chickering yvas born. The first Chickering piano is still extant, i treasured and carefully guarded relic, the work of Jonas Chieker ing’s own hands. Its remarkable condition today testifies to the thought and care the young artisan put into its construction, for its tiny voice is still clear and greslrage res/ifiant, although tinged by its with a far-off quality, as tho.-.gb it sang, as indeed it does, of other days and other times. ELLIS VICTIM OF PECULIAR ACCIDENT Many friends will regret to lean that Mrs. G. P. Ellis was the victim of all accident which lias caused con¬ siderable pain.
