SUPPI.Y OF PRISONERS
FOR ROAD WORK SH0R1
ACCOUNT OF PARDONS
Atlanta, Ga., May 14.—The contin¬
ued depletion of the ranks of prison¬
ers , in the Georgia penitentiary
through paroles, pardons and expira¬
tion of indeterminate sentences, to
get/her with a great decrease in the
number of men sentenced to the peni
tntiary during the first four month.
of this year as compared with, last
year, will seriously cripple road work
m the various counties of the State,
officials of the Georgia Prison Com¬
mission believe.
‘‘There were 157 fewer prisoners
romp.... d to the penitentiary during
the fit: four months of this yeai
than du. the same period last
year,” it was stated at the office ol
the commission. “During the sami
period about two times as many pris¬
oners were released from lire peniten¬
tiary under the indeterminate sen
truce plan as were released durin;
Lie sain eperiod last year.”
The records show that 310 mm
were committed to the penitentiary
during the first four months of thi;
year as compared with 407 during,
tile same period of 1022. During tha.
line, 117 men were released under
the indeterminate sentence system as
r. mpared with 88 for the preceding,
year. Thirty-four were paroled this
year against 2t> last year. The rec
o.ds show that a very small percent¬
age of those who are paroled are re¬
turned to prison.
\ Various reasons are given for the
1 decrease, some officials attributing it
; io the migration of a large number
in' the negroes of the state to the
: North; and others either to a grow¬
ing tendency on the part of the citi
z.t.ns to obey the laws or to a lax en
I'urcement of the laws.
The various counties of the state
are clamoring for convicts to carry
out then- road working projects, it i
stated, and officials of the commission
declare they are powerless to fur
rush them more men in many cases
