POLAR EXPLORERS
MAY SOON TRAVEL
IN GREAT COMFORT
(By Associated Press.)
Stockholm, May 25.—A new type
>f motor sleigh designed to provide
•he comforts of a Pullman car for
tolar explorers has been experiment¬
ed with in the Arctic region of Swe¬
den and is now being perfected by
the inventor, Mr. J. W. Sandstrom,
•hief of the Swedish weather Bureau.
Mr. Sandstrom in an a lPess just
delivered before the Swedish Plty
dcs Society .declared that polar ex¬
ploration ought to be r-.fi ted from the
cl of hazardous ry ,rt to that uf
veil-equipped scientific research. Toe
explorer needs, swift and reliable
means of transportation, a depend¬
able plant for the preparation of
food, a comfortable bed, a table at
which to work, a dark-room for de¬
veloping photographs, etc., and these
advantages are all provided by the
new motor-sleigh.
This new vehicle is an adaption
of the principle of the tank. Suffi¬
cient, supporting area is given to the
caterpillar treads to carry a three
ton cargo over loose .snow several
feet in depth. A 36 horsepower gaso¬
line motor propels this strange craft
at the rate of seven miles an hour.
The interior of the car is fitted oui
compactly with folding beds, patent
kitchen, and other special equuipment
which a scientist needs in a shelter¬
ed place. It is planned to have similar
motor-sleighs in the explorer’s train
for the transportation of fuel an
supplies.
Preliminary experiments with the
new motor-sleigh have been carried,
on in deep snow near the town of
Boden in northern Sweden.

SWISS PEOPLE
SOON TO VOTE ON
PROIII QUESTION
(By Associated Press.)
Lausanne, May 25.—Inspired by
American prohibition, tile prohibi¬
tionists of Switzerland are engaged
in a campaign to reduce the consump¬
tion of strong alcoholic drinks, and
oil June 3 the people themselves by
a referendum will decide the issue.
The private distilling of alcohol
has increased so rapidly in recent
years and the drinking of pure dregs
of distilled liquor, which is given the
popular name of “Sehnaps,” iias be¬
come so widespread among the
masses that the authorities nave be¬
come alarmed. The medical profes¬
sion has launched a movement for
fedora 1 intervention and control.
The consumption of alcoholic drinks
in Switzerland has reached ihe figure
of a billion francs annually for a
population of four millions. The illlJ
federation of Swots physi .-iaus urged
llie government leases tile rights of
manufacture, importation and sale
of ail distilled beverages. This was
held to be too radical, but the cam¬
paign now has been vigorously re¬
opened in order to obtain at least
partial prohibition.
The manufacture of alcohol is a
stale monopoly in Switzerland, and
hot government leases the rights of
distillation to private companies.
The proposed law, which parlia¬
ment .has already adopted, aims at a
double object, the protection of the
monopoly by the curbing of private
distilling, and the reduction of op¬
portunities for the consumption of i
alcohol. The local crusaders are col-1
lccting statistics of the good effects
of prohibition in America to induce j
voters to-support the bill.
