MOUNTAIN SCENES
OF RARE BEAUTY IN
BIG PHOTOPLAY
Lifting two acres of lar.-I bodily
out of the valleys of the Cumberland
mountains and planting it in the foot¬
hills surrounding Hollywood, Calif.,
is literally what was done by the
Paramount company producing "The
Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” a pic¬
ture starring Mary Miles Minter,
with Antonio Moreno, featured as
leading man, which comes to the
Bijou Theatre today only.
Picturesque in its resemblance to
the actual thing, the scene was made
( for sequences of the photoplay men¬
tioned. Two acres of land on the
Lasky ranch were fenced in with
long rail fences. Golden corn, stacked
and appearing like sentinels guard¬
ing the little farm and house, wait
to be hauled from the field.
A cabin home of three rooms, with
several coon dogs, a couple of horses,
scores of chickens and ducks, two
donkeys and ether common natives
cjf the Cumberland barnyard, stand
demurely in the center of the two
acres.
Even a barn, with a hay loft ahd
cackling hens, with stalls and cows
and a nearby pen of hogs, adds color
to a scene beautifully reminiscent of
the Cumberland mountains of East
Tennessee a nd Kntucky during the
past Civil War period.
The story of “The Trail of the
Lonesome Pine,” written by the late
John Pox, Jr., deals with a family
feud in the Cumberland mountains
of Kentucky and Tennessee. Miss
Minter is seen as June Tolliver, a
j ! sprightly and mountain John Hale, girl, who mining meets
! loves a coal
engineer and head /of a local law and
] order organization. He sends June to
schoool. and within two years she is
educated and civilized, as it were.
On her return home her uncle
kills a policeman, and I/ale is oblig¬
ed to arrest him for murder. Then
the fued breaks out afresh, and many
dramatic incidents follow. There are
manp thrills in the subsequent scenes
all of which contribute to make this
picture one 'of the most entertaining
seen here during the current season.
Ernest Torrence, a noted screen
player, is featured in the cast.

demonstrations mystify
and at the same time entertain. He
is possessed with a pleasing person¬
ality qnd denies being possessed with
supernatural powers. His first exper¬
iments deal in thought projection. At
will he projects thoughts suggested
by the audience to his company upon
the stage and has them go through
the different _stunts they are asked
by the members of the audience who
are total strangers to him. This is
all done in lightning rapidity without
a word being spoken by him to any¬
one. Later on during the perform¬
he ’

night he had them in all manner of
forms, being sealed in envelopes, be- ,
tubes tween and cigar box lids, in cartridge |
tin cans, this did not baffle
him and he answered every one. He
announced a special ladies matinee
for Saturday and will appear at the
