“VANITY FAIR” ONE OF
WORLD’S GREAT NOVELS
Probably the most widely read nov¬
el ever written in English is William
Makepeace Thackeray’s “Vanit;,
Fair” which was published in 1848.
This novel has been translated into
every modern language and has been
regarde/t in every pountry as one of
the world’s masterpieces of fiction.
Many .plays have been made from
“Vanity Fair,” notably, in America,
Langdon Mitchell’s adaptation under
the title of “Becky Sharp,” which
served Mrs. Fiske as a starring vehi
fie for several seasons. Marie Tem¬
pest gave another version at the New
Theatre. The first American produc¬
tion was that, of Brougham made
1849; another dramatization wag
duced in 1857, and in 1860 Laura
Keene and Dion Boucicault were seen
in a different dramatization. The fa
mous novelist and playwright, James
M. Barrie, also made a stage adapts
ion of the novel under the name of
ts leading character, .Becky Sharp.
This novel has also been depicted
on the screen both, here and abroad.
