DISILLUSION
It was not love, because it died,
The' thing that made my heart
(lame
Of mounting joy, and wroght each
day
Into a fair oblation to your name.
So white and strong, and yet it died!
■ It was not love, because it died
In petty, uwonsidered ways,
i Dimmed by the shadow of neglect,
Blighted by silence,’ stung by the
turn of a phrase.
Alas, how easily it died!
It was not love, but since it died
Beauty has gone from cloud and
stream;
My heart lies shriveled, which has
fed
Thus long upon the ashes of
dream.
I’m sick of answering my heart's cry!
If it were love, how could it die?
