DREDGEMORGAN
HITS PILE DRIVER
FREDERICA RIVER
Also Tears Away Sixteen Pil=
iii^s on Brunswick=St.
Simon’s Highway
DELAY TO WORK BE
ABOUT THREE WEEKS
The Sunken Machine Was Es¬
pecially Equipped With De¬
vices for the Work—City and
County Sustain 'No Loss.
Steaming through Frederica river
at half past nine o’clock Friday night,
the United States dredge Morgan, in
tow of the United States tug Castle,
crashed into the trestling of the St.
Simon’s Highway and tore it away
for four bents or sixteen pilings. In
carrying away the trestling the big
ocean going dredge also came in con¬
tact with the pile driving machine at
work on the highway in the river nad
turned it over, causing it ot sink in
twenty-nine feet of water!
The dredge was proceeding from
Savannah to Brunswcik, where she
later on arrived and is to do some
work in the harbor here. She was
proceeding at not more than seven
miles an hour, according to Capt.
Vincent Watters, in command, when
on reaching the scene oT the work,
she sheared completely, catching the
trestling and the pile driver midships
with the results above mentioned. In
addition to Capt. Waters, the dredge
has a crew of some fifty officers and
men. Ed Searcy is chief engineer,
and tlie operators are R. R. Hagan,
Harry Johnson and J. R. Martin. Dan
Brown, Savannah pilot, was in charge.
A number of wild rumors were in
circulation yesterday morning as to
the extent cf the damages and the
time it will delay the completion of
the Brunswick-St. Simon’s Highway.
After a conference with the dredge
officials, a visit to the scene of the ae
jfideivt, etc., Engineer Terras, in
charge of the work, iwas seen and he
says the delay will only amount to
from two to three weeks.
Mr. Terras says the damage to the
trestle itself was very slight, four
bents or sixteen piling of the trestle
on the, western approach to the steel
span being carried away. The real
delay and damage, he says, is due to
the sinking of the pile driving ma¬
chine, which is a specially built ma¬
chine for the work, being equipped
with moon beam leads. This machine
will have to be raised and repaired
before it can be used and while an¬
other will be imported, the delay will
lie about as stated.
Engineer Torfas says that the ac¬
tual time lost on account of damage
to the trestle work will be only a few
days and that plans are already be¬
ing made for raising the sunken ma¬
chine, as well as for securing a new
one for the work. There will be no
loss to the city or the county as the
matter of damages is one purely be¬
tween the contractors and the United
States government, owners of the
dredge and the tug.

MALIGNANT HEART
/ DISEASE CURED IN
TWO SEVERE CASES
Hartford, Conn., April 19.—Appli¬
cation of a nqw mercurial formula,
discovered at Johns Hopkins Medical
School and generally administered in
cases of kidney and septic inflamma¬
tion, has apparently effected a cure
in two cases of malignant heart dis
ease, usually fatal, according to an
nouncement at St. Francis Hospital
\ here. The patients, one boy and an¬
other, a young man of 25, were suf¬
fering with high tempeartures and
with little change of recovery, the dee
tors stated. After the remedy was
applied, temperatures returned to
normal and both patients are believed
to be out of danger.

WIFE OF PRESIDENT OF AL¬
BANY BANK MEETS DEATH
IN BATHROOM
Albany, Ga., April 19 (JP)
Paul J. Brown, wife of the president '
of the Albany Exchange Bank, died
at her home here shortly before '
noon
today as the result of injuries sus
tained about an hour earlier when a
gas water heater in the bahtroom of
her home exploded.
The exact manner in which the ac¬
cident occurred is not clear. Mrs.
Brown remained unconscious after
she was fonud in the bathroom fol¬
lowing a heavy explosion. Apparent¬
ly she was not burned, although the
towels in the room were scorched.
Force of the explosion was
enough to blow out a window and it
is impossible to tell whether the gas
fumes overcome her or effects of the
heavy explosion are responsible
her death.
Firemen were quickly summoned
and attempted to restore the unfor¬
tunate woman by means of a pulmo
tor and they were assisted a few min
\utes later by physicians, but all ef¬
forts proved futile.

PRAWN INDUSTRY IS NOW ONE
BRUNSWICK’S GREATEST
Many persons do not seem to
realize the magnitude of the
prawn industry in Brunswick and
do not appreciate the fact that it
disburses- more money and to a
more varied class of people than
! any other here. But it is a fact,
nevertheless.
At present there is a total of
three hundred boats engaged in
this business in the harbor. These
craft carry crews of from two to
four men and in some cases, more
than the latter number. Added
to the already large fleet now in
operation will be sixty which are
now under construction and some
of these are of the larger kind,
but it may be said that all are

MRS. ELIZABETH GAENNSLEN,

Gaennslen, attractive 26-year-old di¬

A few days ago Mrs. Gaennslen
sold her half interest in a restaurant

continued to work at the place as
cashier, taking a iate shift, until 2

When Mrs. Gaennslen failed to ap¬

NO INTENTION OF
VEILED THREAT
Second Letter of Japanese Am¬

IS A FRANK AND FRIENDLY
EXPLANATION HUGHES SAYS
In the Face of Friendly Relations
Existing Between the Two
Countries He Had Doubt
About Construing It as Threat
Washington, April 19(fPt—Spe¬
cific disclaimer that any intention
of a veiled threat in the phrase,
“grave consequences” in the re¬
cent communication of Ambassa¬
dor Hanihnra to Secretary
Hughes, protesting against the
Japanese exclusion feature of the
immigration bill, was made by
Ambassador Hanihara in a sec¬
ond letter to Secretary Hughes
made public todav and character¬
ized by Mr. Hughes as a “frank
and friendly explanation.”
The letter of Ambassador Han¬
ihara and the reply of Secretary
Hughes were made public by the
state department. Mr. Hughes’
letter saying in the light of the
context of the original letter and
the prevailing friendship and un¬
derstanding of the two countries,
he had a doubt that the word
“grave” would be taken as a
threat.
The house, passed the bill last Sat¬
urday by a majority of more than
four to one and the senate acted last
night by a vote of sixtvtwo to six.
Both chambers made a decision in
respect to the Japanese exclusion aft¬
er Ambassador Hanihara T s letter de¬
fining the “gentlemen’s agreement”
and the warning of “grave conse
quences” had been forwarded to con
gvess bv Secretary of State Charles
E. Hughes, who with President Coo
tidge consistently opposed the enact¬
ment of tlist provision nf the bill.
The final opposition of President
Coolidge, when the bill goes to him, is
yet unknown to the members f con¬
gress beyond the fact that he has ex¬
pressed his disapproval of the provi¬
sion before it was passed.
Leading Republican conferees have
Visited him and pointed out the sig¬
nificance of the overwhelming senti¬
ment in both houses as opposed to his
position. Whether this will have ef¬
fect yet remains to be seen, because
he has maintained a Sphinx-like sil¬
ence as to his intentions in the use of
his veto prerogative.
