own defense today and read a

The state rested its case shortly

Judge Hardy appeared before the
investigators yesterday ami told his

The jurist admitted receiving the

the truth" about the evangelist’s dis¬

Macon, Ga., Jan. 30.——An abdominal
wound, received last night when 'he
attempted to foil the efforts of bur
glars pilfering the cash box of his
filling station, today proved fatal to
Lester H. Holleman, 58.

ed today in Mrs. Ruth’s will.
The document filed in surrogate’s (
court left the bulk of her $50,000;
estate to “my beloved charge and;
ward, Dorothy Helen Ruth, at one
time known as Marie Harrington.”

At the time of Mrs. Ruth’s death

Washington, Jan. 30.—Department
of justice reports that Perry Howard,
suspended assistant attorney general
and Republican national j committee¬
for Mississippi, had 1 deposits in

000 above his $6,000 over a period
of eighteen months were placed be¬
fore the senate patronage investigat¬
ing committee today.
Howard, a negro, was recently ac¬
quitted of a charge of selling post
masterships in Mississiimi.
In the Howard deposits, the de¬
partment of justice reported it had
found two checks for $500 each drawn
on a Clarksdale, Miss., bank. Miller
E. McGilchrist, of the department,
said one of the checks was signed by
Mrs. C. A. Withington, of Tutweiler,
Miss., and was dated June 23, 1927,
the same day on which Howard rec¬
ommended her as acting postmistress
at Tutweiler. The other $500 check,
he said, was drawn against the ac¬
count of John H. Cook, United States
attorney in Mississippi.
McGilchrist said that an inquiry
showed that Cook had explained that
he lent the $500 to the husband of
Mrs. Withington and was later re¬
paid. Chairman Brookhart, of the j
com¬
mittee, remarked that “this seems
like a high price for a postmastership
in such a small town.”
The justice department reported al¬
so that John T. Risher, who shares
office with Howard here, had de¬
posited $14,000 in banks here between
January §, 1927 and October, 1927.
Senator McKellar, of Tennessee,
demanded that Attorney General Sar
gent be summoned before Hie commit
