MARKETS
By CLAUDE A. JAGGER
Associated Press Financial Editor.
New York, April 22. selling (/Pj—After the a
flurry of rather active in
first hour, the market pointed upward
at times but gave way before fresh
selling during the early afternoon.
Failure of important support to ap¬
pear left bears in control.
Fluctuations narrowed somewhat,
but several issues penetrated further
into new low ground. Rails were still
under pressure, although a report that
executives had discussed wage reduc¬
tions with union heads was denied. At¬
lantic Coast Line dropped (! points and
Atchison, Delaware and Hudson, and
Cotton Belt lost 2 or more. New York
Central dipped below the 100 mark. U.
S. Steel slipped off more than a point
to another minimum since 1027. Loss¬
es of a point or so were numerous.
The mid-week bus iness statistics
were in the aggregate scarcely cheer¬
ful. Freight car loadings for the
weed ended April 11, were mildly en¬
couraging, showing a gain of 9,423
cars. The total was 173,382 cars un¬
der the like week of 1930.
Weekly steel trade reviews were in
keeping with advance estimates, in¬
dicating that ingot output for the
GO country at large has slipped below
per cent of capacity.
Petroleum statistics lor last week
showed a gain of 113,750 barrels in
the daily average crude output, the
largest in some time.
A substantial shrinkage in gasoline
stocks during the week was about the
only favorable aspect of the figures.
Gasoline stocks are now at about 46,-
400,000 barrels, or 7,400,000 lower
than a year ago. The reduction
achieved, however, is only little more
than half that planned.
Credit eased, with bankers accept¬
ance rates shaded % of one per cent,
and call money again offered in the
outside market as low as 1 per cent.
The dose was weak. Sales ap¬
proximated 2,COO,,000 shares.

SOME BIG TURNIPS
ARE GROWN HERE
A fine demonstration of what can
he accomplished in farming in Glynn
county, ur in Brunswick for that mai¬
ler, in demonstrated at a small half
acre garden planted by H, W. Knight,
of the A., li. Al railroad, near the
simps of that road.
Turnips planted on February 2 and
now being furnished many of the
shopmen and they are unquestionably
the largest, ever grown in this county.
Three of the turnips were brought to
The News office this morning and dis¬
played. They weighed over five
Hounds each and were solid,, with the
tops as lender as possible. ’(The tur¬
nips are of the purple top variety. Mr.
Knight stated that the half acre
planted will produce 2,000 bunches.
