FEVER STATUS
HAS IMPROVED
Dread Contagion Is Being Well
Corralled at Hampton.
ORIGINAL PATIENT IS FOUND.
It Is Hoped to Confine Disease to
Soldiers’ Home and Town
of Phoebus.
A Washington special says: The
yellow fever situation at Hampton con
tinues favorable in the opinion of the
officials of the marine hospital service.
According to official reports there were
no new cases Thursday.
It is hoped to confine the disease to
the Soldiers’ Home and Phoebus, but
Surgeon General Wyman thinks it too
early to make a definite prophecy re
garding the outbreak, as it is only a
few days since the presence of the fe
vor became known to the officials at
Washington.
Tuesday night at half-pest 8 o’clock
Dr. Wyman received the following
telegram from Dr. Vickery, stationed
at the Soldiers’ home:
“Situation favorable and encourag
ing, No new cases and no deaths.’’
Dr. Wyman also received from the
home a list of the members of the in
stitution who were furloughed on and
after the 22d of July, the day after a
number of the inmates became sick
with the fever. Accompanying the
names were the exact dates and the
time of the furlough and the destina
tion of those to whom they were grant
ed.
The surgeon general gave this in
formation to the press and asks that
newspapers in the places to which
these persons have gone publish it
and. that medical officers hold under
close observation for a period of at least
ten days after they left the home such
of the inmates as they may be able to
find.
Most of the inmates furloughed have
fortunately gone to northern cities.
Fortress Monroe Well Patrolled.
burgeon Pettus wired from Fortress
Monroe that there is nothing new and
that a good patrol is being maintained.
Regarding rumors said to prevail in
Newport News that government exports
had pronounced the disease not to be
yellow fever, Dr. Wyman and General
■Sternberg each said that no such in
formation had been sent to either of
them, and that no reason was known
for questioning that the disease was
yellow fever.
The marine hospital officials at
Hampton Lave succeeded in tracing
and locating the former inmate of the
Soldiers’ home who is believed to have
brought yellow fever to that place.
His name is William Thomas. He ar
rived at the home on a transport from
Santiago, where he had been visiting
between July 2nd and sth last. He was
admitted to the home as a veteran and
shortly afterwards developed chills
and fever.
In the light of subsequent events
the experts believe there is little doubt
that he was affected with a mild case
of yellow fever, although it was not
diagnosed as such at the time. When
well enough to travel, he left the home
and his baggage was sent to Phoebus.
The man himself went to Columbus
City, Wash., where he now lives ;
Surgeon General Wyman regards it as
fortunate that Thomas went to such a
high latitude, as it greatly lessens any
danger of infection.

Tteo Florida Kailroad Commission’s In.
Itiul Sitting; aeaC,ourt.
The Florida railroad commission sat
for the first, time Tuesday afternoon as
a court in Tallahassee. The petition
of the Atlantic, Valdosta and Western
Terminal Company to allow the rail
way to use the Jacksonville union de
pot was taken up.
This matter is extremely important,
and will be hard-fought. The power
.of the commission, and probably the
constitutionality of the act creating it,
•will be settled upon the tinal determi
nation of this case, hence vast inter
ests arc involved.

Not a Vendetta.
“I understand that there is a ven’

“A what?” asked the back-county
Kentuckian.
“A vendetta; one of these fights
which are taken up from generation to
generation, and which sometimes last
hundreds of years.”
“No, sir,” was the answer.”- “This

LOVE OE PERFUMES.
People In Power Hove Alwnyo Feed
Them Laviehlr.
The too free use of perfumes about
the person has been avoided for many
years, and held inadmlssable In good
society, the merest hint of a faint odor
being all that was possibly allowed.
Recently this edict of good taste has
not been so strictly regarded, and such
perfumes as violet and sandal-wood,
both of them expensive ones when
pure, together with heliotrope, ar«
somewhat In fnvor again. It is quite
likely that the very general wearing of
large blue violets has led the way to
this.
It Is not easy to eradicate the love of
perfumes anyway, for the nerves made
to appreciate them will always demand
satisfaction; and since the race, civil
ized or uncivilized, lias existed, the
love of perfumes has existed too.
Even animals are sensitive to per
fumes, and it used to be said that one
of the helps of the great horse-tamer
Rarey was a bunch of violets.
Emperors, and priests, and people
in power, have always been lavish in
their use of perfumes. SAladin wash
ed down the walls of the Mosque of
Omar with rose water, to make the
Mohammedan heaven more attractive.
Some of the hourls were declared to
have bodies of pure musk. The Turk
has always been more fond of musk
than the Occidental is.
At a later period than that of Rich
ard’s great foe one of the French
monarchs—Louis Qulnze, we think
used a different perfume for every
day in the year, although some of the
shades of variance must have been in
finitesimal. It was a poetical custom
of the court at about that period for
two lovers to use the same perfume.
Our grandmothers, and theirs before
them, sometimes scented their hair
dressings by megns of an apple stuck
full of cloves and spices, kept a long
time in the pomade, which was per
haps as simple a method and provided
as simple an aroma as could have been
Invented. They loved, too, the odor of
patchouli, with which everything com
ing from India or China in those rich
old days of the India trade was loaded
—somewhat too powerfully for modern
taste; but perhaps they loved the scent
more for its asociation with the won
derful shawls and scarfs and stuff
which It accompanied than for itself.—

Owned 30,000 Autographs.
The owner of probably the greatest
private collection of autographs in the
world, Alexander Polonyi, has died in
Vienna. His collection was so large
that it filled the entire upper story of
his house. Polonyi possessed the auto
graphs of persons, not only
of moderns .but of medieval and
Renaissance jiersons as well. He was
not particular ns to age, religion or
profession. All he stood out for was
that the autograph was to be that of a
person of certain historical importance.
He possessed original writings which
have not yet been printed of Michael
Angelo and Marie Antoinette, letters
by Goethe, pages of music by Wagner
and Beethoven, original documents
from the eleventh century, private let
ters of Canovas, old Hebrew scrolls
and sermons by famous Hussites.
It was Polonyl’s greatest pleasure
to show his treasures to scholars and
to bewilder them with the wealth and
variety of the materials which he
placed before them in the calculated
disorder we have attempted to de
scribe. He began life as an apprentice
to a Leipsic bookseller. His greatest
success was with a magnificent collec
tion of Duerer's drawings, which he
happened on quite accidentally and
sold to the Royal Gallery, in Berlin,
for a prodigious sum of money. Pol
onyi had ho scientific dr historical
