Ah, what is sadder in this life
than to see two men who pine for a
wife? If they coaid get 1 one they
would never harm her; one of them
is a doctor and the other a farmer,
They are 'both of them honorable
and good, and they. would marry if
they could; they are not looking
for beauty -alone—they want a com
panion to cheer their home. These
two swains are modest and sedate,
until they begin talking of their
lonely state. We have heard “Doc’’
say to Jean that his luck was the
worst ever seen, in fact it was hades
on a sni ill scale, and such a life could
not .prevail. Said Jean I am tired
of this life too, let’s look around and
sec what we can do: we’ll plunge in
society’s gay whirl and sets if We j
can’t both find us a girl. They
both have agreed as to what, to do
so as to work their plans successfully J
through; the doctor is hustling now
to see if he can’t find one who is
willing his wife to be. But rumor
has it that farmer Jean has already
his destiny seen; should this prove
to be a fact, lie’ll soon be led to the
matrimonial rack. But the doctor,
poor fellow, is still on the scout,
trying to find a girl to pick oht; so
come, girls, relieve the strain, ac

Watermelon Itogues, Beware!
For several years Lincohiton has
been infested with a elan of wrier
melon rogues, whose chief occupa¬
tion this time of year is to visit the
different patches at night and rob
their neighbors of that which they
are too lazy to work for themselves,
Several nights ago Mr. E. T. Strath
er’s patch was entered by some of
this clan and four of Ins finest
ons were carried away. As we all
know, Mr. Strother is anything else
but a selfish nian and would, willingly
give a melon to anyone for the ask
the ing, but he .protests accorded strongly the against
treatment, him

to the iniqnitious business has in
jeofed heavy doses of strychnine in

We would thsrofore say to Water

The Meeting at Dine Grove.
Revs. Davis and Gaines closed a
very successful protracted meeting
at Pine Grove church, near Leverett,

to the church roll and many
went up each service for prayer. Tho
meeting lasted ten days and was at¬
tended by large crowds each day.
