It now looks like a board of
irbitration will have to be appointed
to settle the dispute between the
friends of Admirals Sampson and
Schley as to who is entitled to the
credit for the destruction of the
ipanish fleet at Santiago.
Prof. B. M. Zettler, the Populist
candidate for state school commis¬
sioner, is making some telling blows !
for the party in Mis campaign tour
over the state. He is said to be a
graceful and fluent speaker aud
__ makes a deep impression upon bis
hearers wherever he speaks. We
sehould extend him a cordial in¬
vitation to come to Lincoln when we
'have eur meeting.

I .. So fitr as we are informed no one
m. jJ, uCtiArfS^geffed for the Pop
fulist candidate for congress from the
10th district. We know of no better
man for this place than Hon. John
IT. West, of Thomson. Mr. West
| is a conservative man and is popular
'with all parties. He was the nominee
tiyo years ago, but because of the
i disorganization caused by fusion with
Jthe national democracy, many Pop
lilists refrained from voting in the
■general election, thereby causing him
Lto lose the solid support of the party.
|Riit with oiw present effective organ¬
ization his election would be certain
Should lie again run this year.
The prohibitionists of Wilkes are
active just at this time. Last
a large convention was held at
presided over by Eev.
[effected ' J. h. Gross: An organization was
and committeemen appointed
for each district to secure enough
signatures to have an election ordered.
It is said the liquor men will not
make a fight for the retention of the
barrooms, but between prohibition
a dispensary they will support
the former. So it seems that. Wilkes
county will cither have to follow the
of South Carolina and mo¬
nopolize the evil or go out of the
business entirely.
'{ A ■ ■■•■ — -------
A mass meeting of the Democrat
of Hancock county invited the I’op
lists to participate in the democratic
primaries of that county for state
and county offices. The Populists
accepted the invitation and voted for
the best men iu eight, and a lot of
the old Democratic bosses and heelers
who were candidates were defeated.
Seeing that the Populists of the coun¬
ty would not work under the lash as
their democratic brethren were doing,
-the bosses bad a meeting of their
executive committee called and “re
solved” that only “known democrats”
should hereafter vote in tiie demo
cratic primaries. That is a pretty
clever wav.to treat gentlemen—invite
to your house and then kick
them out because they have opinions express’
of their own, and dare to
And the Populists in every
in the state will have the same
treatment meted out to them when
they offer to act with the Democrats.
The democratic bosses only want
harmony when they can get all the
Courier.
Now, Lot Us All Unite!
In another column in the Jour¬
nal the result of the election Wed¬
nesday is told. • To some the returns
no doubt were disappointing; to
others they were highly gratifying.
But this was no more than was
expected. With so many candidates
in the field for each of the offices, it
could not be otherwise. It was a
dead certainty that many good men,
for there were many in the race,
would have to go down in defeat,
while it was possible for only a few
to come out victorious.
in the campaign just ended the
editor oi this paper neither worked
for nor opposed any of the candi¬
dates, though lie was asked to do so.
He took the position that the people,
clothed with their sovereign majesty,
alone should say who they wanted
to manage their county’s affairs,
without any dictation from the lead¬
ers of the party or the party organ.
This policy of the paper was carried
out to the letter, as our filc-s will
show. We believe, too, that the
leaders of the party, if if be proper
to so designate certain men with
delegated powers, were hands of!' in
the 11/ d. To he more definite, the
election Wednesday resulted just as
a majority of the voters desired.
Their will was freely and fearlessly
expressed over the county and every
ballot was honestly counted.
The pt-opio have spoken; the nom¬
inees of the party have been named.
Now, let us all unite in one solid
band and work for their election
;i [ OU g Avitti our state ticket. Let’s
give them the hugest majority that
has yet been recorded in old Lincoln,
They are all good men and worthy
our solid snppoit. We hope to see
the defeated candidates go hues to
their neighbors and urge upon them
the importenCe of supporting iu the
general election the men who v.vve
