Industrious Danish Children.
The children of Denmark arc taught
to unit when but five years old. Even
in the public schools this is Quite an
Institution, although the private
schools made it an absolute rule, one
hour each day being given to that in
dustry. The same rule applies in Go
homelife, one hour being devoted
daily either to sewing, knitting, cro
cheting. embroidery or laceiaaking.
Nor is this considered sufficient; the
young woman of the family is sur
posed never to be idle, she must always
have something on hand to bo taken
up. If a chance visitor comes in, or i
friend arrives for tlx • day, but h ha ve

mouths of babes struggling with ex

semiskows;” "a palimpsest is a dis¬
ease among cattle in South Africa;”
and “an optimist is a man who looks
aftcr your eyes, and a pessimist is a
man who looks after your feet.’’

The population of the Colorado Des¬
ert, in Southern California, has grown
from nothing to about 1000 persons
within a year, and a still more rapid
increase is looked for. Irrigation is
turning the desert into farm lands. It
is calculated that within two or three
years at least 1,000,000 acres will be
thus reclaimed in Southern California,
Arizona and Lower California. The
lands lie in the basin of the Colorado
River, where the great heat and ex¬
treme dryness of the air are not un¬
favorable to human beings, provided
plenty of water is to be had. Most of
the water used in irrigation comes
from the river, but in Southern Cali¬
fornia much is supplied by artesian
wells. Tii-o irrigated lands are- very
fertile.

In an address before the British As¬
sociation at Glasgow, recently, Francis
Darwin called attention to the sense
of gravitation in plants. It is that
sense, for example, that makes a pine
tree grow straight upward. A plant
that curves, assumes that position be¬
cause its sense of gravitation makes
it take the one best suited to its needs.
Some flower stalks are very curiously
guided by the gravitation sense. Tlio
narcissus is an example. At first there
is a straight shaft piercing the ground,
with its compact pointed flower bud.
But as the flower opens the stalk
bends close to the top and brings the
flower tube into a roughly horizontal
I position, where it shows off its bright
; colored crown to attract the insects,
on the visits of which it depends for
fertilization. The flowers arc guided
to the right position by the gravitation
sense, and they increase or diminish
the angular bend in their stalk until
the right position is attained.

Railroading in Texas.
In Texas railroads are amenable to
discipline. No train is allowed to wait
for another train more than thirty min¬
utes after the time scheduled for its
departure. In every other Southern
State trains run anywhere from one to
seven hours late, sometimes waiting
on each other half a day. Texas has
put a stop to this idiocy.—New York
