Miss Clara Benson, of Augusta,
visited her cousin, Mrs. J. II. W.

tives and.friends will endeavor to
make her stay pleasant while in the
county.

Preaching Sunday.
There will be preaching next Sat¬
urday and Sunday at the Baptist
church by Rev. J. 0. Mays, The
subject for Sunday will be: “The
intermediate state, or the home of
the soul between death and the res¬

Complimentary Dinner.
Last Saturday, a: his home at
Double Branches Mr. John Bussey
gave a barbecue dinner to Mr. J. D.
Lane and his bride, upon their return
from J/iuiroe county. The affair
was a splendid success and highly
eujoved by those present. Livery
thing in the way of eatables, to
tempt the appetite was served, and
joy reigned o’er the festive board,

this popular young couple.

Melasville, closed yesterday after a
successful term. An exhibition was

county. I desire to say that the re¬
port is absolutely and unqualifiedly
false. Mr. Hardwick has never sent
rue one cent of money for any such
purjiose nor has he even men
tioned such ti thing to me. I fnr
thermore believe that ne is above any
such lew methods to obtain a seat in
consress. The people will under¬
stand. however, that this is just a
trick, sprung at the last moment, to
prejudice the voters.

Commencement
Exercises of the Lincolnton
High School. An Interest
Event.
The closing exercises of the Lin
colnton High School, which took
place last Thursday pupils and Friday teach- did
great credit to the and
era of the school and was highly en¬
joyed by a large audience at each
session.
The exercises were begun Thurs¬
day night, in which the entire school
took part. The program consisted
of recitations, dialogues, music,
sketches, etc. The large audience
that filled the hull wore pupils. delighted
with the work of Uie Each
and every one of the children, from
the youngest to the eldest, accpiitted
themselves in a splendid large manner.

characters well placed did and
every one of the actors excellent

the performance will compare
favorably with anything ever given
by local talent, and with a number
so-called professionals that we

The music during the entire com¬
mencement was furnished by Miss
Clara Berryman, Col. Strother and
Dr. Crawford. This was one feature
of the commencement that was
especially enjoyed by .exm^one.

Brof. Stephenson and his able
assistant Miss Bessie IV’are, deserves
the tlunks of our people for the
splendid entertainment last week.
Col. Strother is a veritable mock¬
ing bird when it comes to singing.
He favored the audience with several
operatic solos.
Fritz Ware was warmly congrat¬
ulated bv Ins many friends for the
admirable manner in which he de¬
claimed. His speech was an excel¬
lent one and was delivered in a
pleasing manner.
Frank Glaze astonished his friends
by his splendid oratorical powers.
The tlninks ot the scholars are
rendered to Dr. W. B. Crawford for
the handsome medal that he presented
to the school. His example should
be followed by other citizens, for in
this way the boys are stimulated to
a friendly rivalry—each trying to
excel the others.
Wayne llollenshead is a fine or¬
ator for one of his age, and it is
only a matter of a few years before
he will he a prize winner.
Masters Walter Humphreys, Willie
and Walter Groves and Lamar
Cartledge, did remarkably well and
pleased their friends by their good
recitations.

attended the commencement.
Tufct Dunaway is a splendid young
speaker, as was evidenced, by his
brilliant effort Friday morning.
Brioleau Culbertson's speech was a
gem. Brioleau is an easy, graceful
speaker and his friends are much

a revelation to those who attended.
The dialogues and sketches were
par excellence.
Our anmetmes are a fine lot of
actors.
Master Meynard Groves won a
place in the hearts predicted of the audience, him
and many of them for
a bright future. Ilis speech was a
fine one.
Mr. Low Estes the winner of the
medal, is to be congratulated on his
splendid victory. His speech was a
masterpiece, delivered in an easy,
graceful manner that captured the
entire audience.
