POPE DID NOT WANT NTW GOWNS
Lee’s Disinclination to Spend Money for
His Own Uses.
j This story is told to illustrate the
1 pope’s dislike of spending money on
1 himself: The other day Pio Centra,
; his old and tried personal attendant,
i opened the discussion while dressing
j him in the morning, by remarking
that his gown was not as new as it
might be. "I suppose I have yourr
holiness’ permission to order your
tor the jubilee?” he added.
| What gowns tor the jubilee? re
; plied Leo XIII. sharply. “I have three
| sets already, and certainly require no
more. Why should I spend good
money for what I do not want?”
' “But, holy father,’ protested Cen
; tra, who knows his master’s weak
ness, “supposing some one of the
great personages who are received by
vour 1 holiness should notice a defect
» | SUCll as this (pointing . to an lnVlSlbl© . . ,
spot on one sleeve) ? He might think
| you had put on your old clothes, not
considering him worthy of the best.”
After a pause Leo XIII. said with a
| sigh: “Well, perhaps you are right,
i Order them—but only one, mind you;
; and my poor people will have to go
! without so much bread. How dread¬
ful to be obliged to spend so much
money on one’s clothes.”
Senator Hoar’s New House.
Senator Hoar has bought a house on
' ■ Connecticut avenue, Washington, a
! three-story brick structure of a dozen
rooms. He borrowed the $18,000 which
it cost, but hopes to make a profit by
selling before long, tie and Mrs. Hoar
have boarded for thirty-three years in
Washington hotels. Much disappoint¬
ment is felt in the capital because
Senator Clark does not intend to build
a residence on the site of the old
Stewart castle which he purchased
some time ago. Finishing touches are
being put to his splendid home in New
York, and it is said the senator will
not build again outside Montana.
A portable street light of great il¬
luminating power has been devised by
the Westminster County Council for
lessening accidents from fogs in Lon¬
don. The torch, a cylindrical tank,
eighteen inches in diameter and two
feet high, is charged with petroleum
and compressed air. When it is light¬
ed, the torch flares up two feet with a
power of 1,000 candles.
MADE LlVINfi BY CRACKING WHIPS
Curious Trad* Discovered by the Police
of France.
The Paris police have recently been
informed by one af the fraternity of
whip-crackers' that such a calling ex¬
ists and claims recognition as one of
the "professions” by the exercise of
which men earn their livelihood in
France.
Whip-crackers, it appears, are men
who possess strong wrists and are
willing to crack whips all clay long, if l
required, on receipt of a suitable fee.
At the commencement of the shooting
season, when the proprietors of neigh
boring demesnes are not good friends,
one who bears ill-will to the other
engages a whip cracker, whose duty it
is to crack a whip so as to frighten
away all the birds at the approach of
the disliked sportsman and his friends.
The whiperackers- are also found
useful by farmers afflicted with dis¬
eased cattle which they cannot sell.
Having engaged a whiperaeker, they
turn out the sick beasts on the most
frequented highway they can find. The
cracker follows with his whip, osten¬
sibly to guide the cattle, really to
drive them under the wheels of a car¬
riage, a motor car or a tram. This he
does by cracking his whip at the
critical moment so as to frighten the
beasts and drive them to destruction.
She Was No Gordon Bleu.
Several ladies sat in their club a
few evenings ago, discussing the vir¬
tues of their husbands.
“Mr. Bingleton,” said one of them,
referring to her life partner, “never
drinks and never swears—indeed, he
has no bad habits!”
“Does he ever smoko?” someone
asked.
“Yes. He likes a cigar just after
he has eaten a good meal. But I sup¬
pose, on an average, he doesn’t smoke
more than once a month.”
Some of her friends laughed, but
she didn’t seem to understand why.
