ALAMO SUFFERS
ICE FAMINE.
Together with the dry and hot weath
er, comes the ice famine. It seems that
the factories ean’tmake it fast enough.
For several days this week the people
had to take ice in broken quantities—
in fact, there was none to get, part of
the time. The local ice man has been
doing his best to keep the people cool,
but then the ice would giye out. The
demand for ice is perhaps greater this
season than in the history of Alamo,
and increased means should be employed
to keep it on hand. The summer has
just begun and for the supply of ice to
give out this early in the game, looks
bad for the future. Preparations should
be made to handle ice in sufficient quan
tities so that it could be ordered ahead
and not give out on us so suddenly.
respected citizen of this county, died
at his home near Jordan’s still Wednes
day of last week. Ho had been a
minister of of the Baptist denomination !
for 40 years, and had been instrumen
tal in bringing many to repentance.
He was an old confederate veteran,
and attended the late reunion at Nash
ville.
He leaves a wife and large family to
mourn his loss, besides a host of friends.
He was laid to rest in the Bracewell
cemetery Friday afternoon in the pres
ence of a large number of sorrowing
relatives and friends.

Barrow County’s Bill .
Passes House.
Atlanta, July 10—By a constitutional
majority of 136 to 35 the house this
afternoon passed the bill creating the
new county of Barrow out of Gwinnett,
Jackson and Walton, with Winder as j
the county site.
In doing so the temper on new coun-'
ties was pretty clearly sounded, inas- ।
much as the opposition to this county
had heen as powerful and as vigorous 1
as any new county proposition ever
offered before the law-making body.
Advocates of Candler were in high
spirits, for they felt this vote augured
well for them. It is practically safe
to say now that every new county
proposition favorably recommended by
the committee on constitutional amend
ments will pass the house with flying
colors. But ail ol them may strike
^■M^hngblocks in the senate.

Fed Walters Undergoes
Successful Operation.
Mr. F. L. Walters was taken quite
ill lest Thursday night, with what was
first thought to be an attack of accute
indigestion, but which later developed
into a case of appendicitis. He received
medical aid until it was decided by his
physician that an operation was neces
sary. Preparations were made and on
Monday morning, accompanied by Mrs.
Walters, he went to Sandersville, where
he was operated on Wednesday by Dr.
Rawlins.
Last reports from his bedside are
that the operation was successful and
that he is on the road to recovery,
Washington county is the old home of
Mr. and Mrs. Walters and for this rea
son they preferred having this delicate
operation performed by an old family
physician. They will visit friends and
relatives before returning home.
