WHEELER COUNTY EAGLE, ALAMO, GEORGIA.
Be Sure of The
Water You Drink
The Georgia State Board of Health
gives the following facts regarding the
danger in drinking impure water.
Pure drinking water is of such vital
importance in the protection and pre
servation of health, says the Georgia
State Board of Health, that not only
every community, but each isolated
family, should be absolutely satisfied
as to the quality of water it has to use.
Bad water—water polluted by human
excreta—is a frequent source of ty-1
phoid fever; it may be the cause ‘of 11
dangerous community epidemics. Plym
outh, Pa., with 8,000 inhabitants, had
1,000 cases of typhoid fever and 100 j
deaths because, through carelessness, '
the infected excreta from one typhoid |
patient, thrown out upon the hillside I
snows, got into its source of drinking i
water. The cause was discovered be
yond question, but when it was too'
late; the damage had been done.
Bad water is also a conveyor of chol
era and, there can be little doubt, of I
dysentery and other diseases. Besides, |
polluted water, even if free from these I
disease germs, is debilitating to the i
system and unsafe for use by children .
and those with delicate stomachs.
Water to be good should not only be ‘
clear and colorless that is free from
suspended matter giving rise to a cloudy :
or milky appearance, but it should,
above all, be free from all kinds of an- ,
imal contamination, particularly that J
which proceeds from man and which is |
the real cause of transferred disease, h
For domestic use it is best that it be L
soft or free from an excess of mineral (
matter.
The Board ot Health has for some I
time been engaged in the work of ex- I
amining the water supplies of Georgia (
cities and towns to determine their I
purity. In the majority of instances
the board,s examination has found that
the water supplies were comparatively ’
pure; but in some cases contamination, I
or probable sources of contamination, (
were found and warning given. The (
town authorities have usually been ,
prompt to remedy such conditions. ,
But epually important in the aggre- ’
gate, which the protection of the town I
and City water supply, is the preserva- |
tion of the purity of the well and spring j
water which must be used everywhere
in the country by the family and fre- .
quently by small communities. An in- I
fected well may spread typhoid or dys
entery to an entirs country or common- I
ity, and then the infection may disap
pear from the well before the disease ,
develops .
But beet of all is the covered well
with a pump. Speaking from a sanitary
standpoint, the open well with its old ,
fashioned and too often germ laden
bucket, is a back number; safe protec
tion of drinking water demands the
covered well with a pump, and the cov
ering must be of more material im
pervious to water, such as concrete and
cement, threugh which no filth may
trickle.
The most important lesson which the
people of Georgia must learn, particu
larly in the country districts, at the
school house as well as at the home, in
order to prevent the sontamination of
drinking water, is the necessity of
constructing and using the sanitary dry
closet. The Board of Health will be
glad to furnish, upon application, ap
proved plans for the building of
sanitary dry closets which may be con
sidered perfectly safe.
The Board of health will also make
free analyses of drinking water, for
communities or individual families.
Municipality, schools, factories or other
communities where many persons drink
from one source, and which are desi
rous of such analyses and examination,
should make application direct to Dr.
H. Harris, secretary State Board of
Health. Atlanta. Individuals desiring
their well water analyzed, should .ap
ply through the member of the board
residing in their congressional district.
While the samples of water for analy
sis may be sent in any convenient, thor
oughly sterilized vessel, it will be found
much more satisfactory and generally
productive of better results to arrange
with the State Board of Health to have
forwarded its specially prepared kits
containing sterilized bottles which may
be returned packed in ice, and with
which full directions are sent regard
ing preparation and shipment of sam
ples for analysis.
First and second year’s new ground,
good dwelling,barn, good wire fencing,
plenty of timber for a mill site and a
; good stock range, this is to go at a
J bargain if taken at once.
