- BEGEIVER'S REPORT
As stated in previous Issue of the
Eagle, the tax receiver of Wheeler
county, Mr. W. T. Hadden, has com
pleted his rounds. He now kas his re- \
port ready and will turn his books
over to the collector, Mr.J. A. Martin,
this week.
The returns show $1,347,424.00, tax
able preperty in the county, plus the
railroad, telephone and other corpora
tion property in the county, which will
swell the returns up to nearly two
mitiion dollars, or to be accurate, one
mili.ol and three quarters.
Mr, Hadden has been very diligent
ia the discharge of his duty and took
time for which he did not receive a
dollar, to satisfy his mind that all the
property in the county had been re
turned. He thinks that under the
cirsumstances, a very fair valuation
has been placed on the property of the
county, Quite & number of tax de
faulters had te be turned in; svme
through carelessness, while some dis
regarded the law in the matter and
refused tocome up to the requirements,
It is thought, with a reasonable tax
levy, the property returned is sufficient
to finance the county, provided, how
ever, money to build the court house
is raised from another source, ‘A bond]
election would solve the problem. We
believe the people want an opportunity
to vote bonds and at an early date the
proper authorities should be petitioned
to call the election, and, perhaps,
thereby forever settle this question, g 0
tar as the present needs are concerned. l
An increase of $125.000 is reportezd“
io the returns this year over lagt and
saveral hoodred acres of land were!
fund by Mr. Hadden in the county that
did net appear on-the digest, that will
herealter help to finance the county.
The local bill which was passed last
week, places the .affairs of the county
in the hands of three good men; while
it dropped two that had been elected
to serve the county. But in the face
of the fact that they were not vetained,
is i 8 hoped that they will value harmony
among the people aboye personal ga'n
and unite, all under one banner, to as
-Bist in establishing harmony am ng
. the people. The ecounty is only in in
fancy and it will take time to adjust
matters. What ‘we need most is a
united people and then the wrongs
will a'l adjusted.

Legislation All Through.
. Messrs John W. Clements and H. L.
Sears left Sunday night for Atlanta, to
be present Monday morning when the
legislature convened for the last week
of this session. "Phey wert up in the
interest of the school bill introduced in
the early part of the session, but which
had, from all indications, been over
looked. ‘lt had gotten partly through,
and it was ‘decided expedient to have
these gentlemen get behind it and
pash it through. They were just in
time, however, and cage back, feeling
that Wheeler coun:y kad accomplished
sqmething through this session of the
Ceorgia legislature. The legisglation
ereating and empowering & board of
commissioners of roads and reyenues
‘was looked after and pushed throguh
‘at the last minute, 80 toapeak, where
in it wonld have been looked oyer.
These gentiemen together with others,
have been very actiye in securing the
best legislation they counld get, looking
to the best interest of the county,
Mr. W. Bermah of Eastman, spent
Sunday here the guest of Mr. H. S,
Hurwitz.
