Loafers
These may be found in about every community. They are
men who seem to have time for every thing but earning a living.
They are not producers and add nothing to the value of property-
As they never have any business with banks they do not interest us.
There is. however, a lot of loafers in this community in whom we
are interested. Many of them bear the legend, “In God we Trust ”
Tney are hidden in out-of-the-way places, pork barrels, old socks,
bed ticks, tin cans, etc. They are earning nothing for their owners
nor are they of the slightest benefit to the community. There are
enough of these loafers in this community to run a bank if put to
work. No farmer would keep a hired man around who did not
work, and if all hens stopped laying eggs and the cows refused to
give any more milk, they would be “turned off.” Let’s get these
dollar loafers busy. The best place to start them is at this bank.
The owners may rest assured that they will be safe in our hands,
but they will be put to work at once. If all the idle money in this
section was at work all the time as it should be, the property of
everyone In the county would be greatly increased thereby.

TWO NEIGHBORS EN-
GAGE IN PISTOL DUEL
Last Sunday afternoon Mr. J. H.
Stroud, one of the largest planters and
influential business men in this county,
and Mr. M. A. Cornett, also a farmer,
and close neighbors, met in a lane near
Mr. R. R. McAllum’s house, and
in sight of each one’s home, and
entered into a pistol duel. Four
shots are reported to have been fired;
three by Mr. Stroud and one by Mr.
Corbett, the three shots fired by Mr.
Stroud entering Mr. Corbitt’s body,
and the shot supposed to have been
fired by Mr. Corbett went estray. There
were no eye witnesses to the shooting,
until after two or more shots had been
fired, and then only as neighbors heard
the pistol reports and going to the
door, they saw two men engaged in a
difficulty.
The trouble is said to have arisen
over a conversation between Mrs.
Corbett and Mr. Stsoud during her
husband’s absence, when Mr. Stroud
went over to her home and demanded
the payment of an account due him by
A Check Book
And it is always available to you, but of no use whatever to the burglar
or “stickup” man. If you lose your check book we give you a new one
free. With your money safe in the bank, yet always at your fingertips
— thanks to the check book—you need not fear the loss of it by fire,
theft, carelessness or accident.
Paying by Check
Is the safest plan for many other reasons. A check is the best
form of a receipt. It saves paying bills twice, for it its evi
dence is indisputable A checking account is really an auto
matic system of bookkeeping. With your check book and paas
book you always know, to a cent, how much money you have.
Your check book enables you to send money by mail without
buying a money order. And, no mistake, paying by check
raiees your credit.
It is best to keep a comfortable balance and keep adding to
it. Remember, it represents your future fortune.

Mr. Corbett. On his return home his
wife told him of Mr. Strouds visit and
it is said that language was used in the
presence of his wife that he resented
and which terminated in the duel.
Mr. Corbett was taken to his home,
only a short distance from the scene,
and Dr. Nelson was called and dressed
the wounds, which at first not thought
to be so serious, but complications set
in and on Tuesday afternoon he died.
Mr. Stroud was arrested Sunday night
by Sheriff Wright on a warrant sworn
out for assault with intent to murder,
and was placed under a $2500 bond,
pending the outcome of the wounds.
He was also arrested Thursday morning
on a warrant charging nira with murder
The affair is deeply regretted by the
entire community, as they are both of
prominent families and have a large
fami'y connection, who have the sym
pathy of all in this trouble.

WHEELER COUNTY
IS CONSTITUTIONAL
So Declared by Judge Park at
the Hearing at Sparta
Last Monday.
The hearing before Judge Park last
Monday of the habeas corpus case,
testing the constitutionality of Wheeler
county, at Sparta, was upheld, after a
long and hard fought battle between
Cols. C. P. Thompson of Alamo, and
W. A. Wooten, solicitor-general of this
circuit, W. S. Mann and Eschol Gra
ham of Mcßae, in behalf of the county
and Oois. Warren Grice and Marcus B.
Calhoun who contested the constitu
tionality of the county.
Messrs J, F. Sikes, H. L. Sears, Jno.
W. Clements, Albert Andrews and J. P.
Tomlinson went oyer monday morning,
groing through the country in an auto
mobile. Returning Tuesday very much
elated over the decision of Judge Park.
Ho having expressed himself as being
thoroughly convinced that the county of
Wheeler is as constitutional as any
county in the state. No point raised by
those contesting the constitutionality
lof the county was considered worthy
of attention. Even the question of
the creation of Wheeler county being
lin excess of the number of counties
' authorized by the Constitution, was
' ignored by Judge Park —He refused to
hear the point argued. The whole
i affair was looked upon by Judge Park
as being entirely absurd. Had the de
cision been against the county, it would
have been put before the supreme
court for a decision on the question at
the earliest possible hearing.
Wheeler county will continue to be a
county, but its constitutionality wil^
be contested at every link by those who
have always been opposed to its cre
ation. Each effort to deprive the
good people of Wheeler county their
liberty, will meet the fate of thehabeas
corpus petition. The enemy may be very
persistent and bull headed, but the
facts are too strong in Wheeler’s favor
to give up anything.
The case may be carried to a higher
court, and the probdbility is that it
will be. A bill of exceptions was
filed by contestants and service ac
knowledged by attorneys for the county
but it is thought that the decision of
Judge Park on last Monday should be
evidence sufficient that no court will
ever declare Wheeler unconstitutional.
Wheeler county is being given some
good advertising, and when she shall
have mot all the obstacles that she
seems destined to meet, no county in
the state will be better known, and
and any better advertised.
Mr. M. A* Corbett
Passes Over River
Mr. M. A. Corbett, a Confederate
soldier, and among Alamo’s oldest in
habitants, died at his home Tuesday
afternoon from the effects of the pistol
shot wounds received on Sunday pre
vious. Hopes were entertained for
his recovery until pneumonia set in and
he grew worse until the end came.
Mr. Corbett was about, sixty-five
years eld, and leaves a wife and one
daughter, Mrs. R. R. McAllum of this
place and one sister, who lives, at
Blackshear. The remains were interred
in the cemetery here Wednesday after
noon at three o’clock in the presence of
a large number of relatives and friends.
The funeral services were conducted at
the grave by Rev. W.’ Coleman.
Before his death, it is said that he
claimed to hold no malice against his
slayer, and expressed the desire that
he be not harmed, and that he had made
peace with his Maker and was ready
to lay down life on thts earth and go
to the one that gave it.
