CHIEF BaILEY MAXES
GOOD SUNDAY HAUL
Chiet Bailey was systematically
initiated into the real life of an Alamo
policeman last Sunday. In the morn
ing be had the life of a policeman put
up to him good and strong. The night
previous his nerve was tested by some
one who emptied his revolver several
times and then disappeared. No ar
rests were made that uight, however,
but Suncap morning he captured seven,
charged with various offenses. Sun
day afternoon he met the south bound
passenger train, which bore a crowd of
colored association folks from Erick,
and when the train stopped a pistol
soot rang out from the rear coach and
the Chief, accompanied by some of the
boys, entered the train and brought out
twe husky bullies, and escorted to the
town prison, one charged with firing off
hispiatoland the other with plain drudk.
Seven of the number appeared before
Mayor Sears Monday morning and an
•ppoatiMHty given them to tell the court
why had been co unfortunate, but in
the face of all they could [do or say, the
usual amount of cash was exacted of
each, without discrimination, and on
payment of same, were allowed to
depart in peace.
BANK THE HARVEST
Who can foretell, with any degree of accuracy, future prices of farm
products? The world-wide counter-pull of supply and dtmerd, 111 qttrth} of
gold, and many other great forces onter into price-making until the complexity
of influence bewilders even the greatest economists.
Previous to 1910, E Dana Durand, the census director, noted the material
increase in farm incomes “owing to the rise in the prices of foqd products.”
Now, despite the high-cost of living cry, the United States Department of
Agriculture shows staple crops are yielding the farmer LESS than they did
in 1910. But “ups and downs” will not daunt the farmer when he has a
comfortable bank balance. Doubtless almost every farmer, by this time, has
formed some estimate of what he is likely to clear from his land: under favor
able circumstances. But how many times has the actual income fallen short of
the previous estimate, with no tangible way to account for the shortage?
It will help keep your money from “slipping away ”in so many email,
useless expenditures. Besides, it is dangerous to keep money about the house

Cotton Damaged by
Winds and Frost.
Succeeding the light rains of the
past few days, we have been faced
with what can be truthfully termed a
winter blizzard There has been a de
cided change in the temperature, and
but for the very brisk winds, the early
morning risers would have found the
earth covered wito a sheet of froft.
Ice was reported, and dispatches state
that it snowed as far south as Athens,
while snow wae reported in the Caro
linas, Tennessee and Alabama. The
drop in the temperature will have a
killing e^ect upon vegetation, and the
top growth of cotton will suffer a death
blow. The top crop is n"t to be con
sidered in the makeup of the cotton
crof of this season any longer, it must
be eliminaten in this setion, at least
The cropocan can only be basep on
what has actually matured, and with a
short crop at best, the price should
leap to the limit in a very short time.
A large percentage of the cotton crop
has already passed from the farmers’
hands, and the advantage they would
realize from an unusual rizein the price
would not help them so much, but we
would all like to see how high it can go.
