Good Roads, Wheeler <
County’s Greatest Need;
The bureau of information of the U. (
S. Department of Agriculture, in a (
recent bulletin, has the following on j
soma of the cost of bad roads, which (
is timely and enlightening: ।
“Two farmers living in separate ।
counties at an equal distance from the
cotton market, learned by telephone j
that cotton had advanced in price SI.OO
per bale. The farmer living on the
bad road responded by hauling one bale
while the other farmer responded by
hauling four hales, owing to the good
road with which he was blessed. The
rise in price gained a profit of four (
dollars to one man and one dollar to ‘
his neighbor, etc , etc. A farmer in
Sullivan county, Tenn., a few miles
from Bristol, had a hundred bushels of
Irish potatoes, which he intended to 1
market during the winter of 1907 8. <
Owing to the bad roads be was unable
to haul the potatoes at all and they
rotted in the cellar. Nevertheless,
the price of potatoes went as high as
$1.40 per bushel in the meantime,'’
A number of similar instances could
be cited in Wheeler conn y where the
conditions are almost as bad as they
were in Tennessee. Good roads ai e
not merely needed for thepleasureand
satisfaction to the people who drive
over them, but they are needed as a
sound business proposition for the
material benefit they will be to the
farmers living along tlxm. It is well
conceded that we need good roads.
Now, the question is, “How can we
get them?" The bulletin mentioned
above shows some of the results of bad
roads, and what it would mean to the
farmer to have good roads. The one
farmer mentioned above could haul
four bales while the farmer with the
bad road could only haul one bale. It
cost the farmer with the bad road just
as much to live as it did the farmer
with the good road Suppose the rail
roads did not prepare good roads, what
would the result be? Let every man,
woman and child in Wheeler county
pull for good roads. Let our grand
juries recommend them and let our
road authorities proceed to burd good
roads for the farmers in Wheeler
county. Our farmers are the back
bone of our country, and they are more
entitled to good roads than the town
and citv people, because they pay most
of the taxes. Let a sentiment rise up
all over Wheeler county for good and
better roads. Our schools, our child
ren and our roads are the hope of our
country. We have a good county with
great possibilities, and all we need to
do is to remain on the job and make
our county second to none in the state.
The way has been paved for better
roads and the county authorities should
stand together as a unit for the better
ment of our roads. It takes money
and material to build our roads and it
costs money, but it pays to spend the
m mey and build the roads. It is bet
ter to be taxed four dollars a year
extra for good roads when we make
fifty dollars and more in transporta-!
tion of our cotton and produce to the i
market to say nothing of the time we
save and the horse flesh we save in I
going to and from .he market and J
other places of necessity.

There is so much money afloat now
that everything is said to be cheap at
twice the prices which were formerly
obtained. If money “keeps on being
plentiful and time's get much better
and prosperity progresses much more
around here the price of a steak will
make one’s week’s wages loom as
weak as if the said wages were going
to the stake indeed.
Farmers, prepare for the fair this
fall, for we are surely gang to have
one. It is not too early now to select
your patches to put in the highest state
of cultivation, and raise something
that will even surprise your neighbor.
The fair association organized here last
week by the teachers of Wheeler,
means something for the future of the
county, and they expect the co-opera
tion of every farmer in the county.
Now is the time to lay your plans and
next fall we can gather the many fine
produets of the county together, and
you will hardly belieye what you have
actually done—the yield will be so
great. The exhibit can be taken to
the state fair in Macon, where it will
be shown to the world what the lands
of this caunty can produce, and there
by advertise her great resources. We
have the goods, and why wait? Let’s
push every pound wa can toward pull
ing off a creditable fair next fall.
