THE OLD AND THE NEW YEAR
—
With this issue we enter upon the
new year nineteen hundrid and four
teen. The past year was not as seen -
ingly prosperous to some as others,
while we should all ftel thankful that
the new year finds it as well with us
as it is. The new year stands out before
us with even greater possibilities of
achieving the things nearest to a life—
peace and prosperity. We are small
creatures, and if we had not been
permitted to see the dawn of the new
year time would move on and our places j
would be filled as though we had never
lived But we who have been spared
to see the sunlight of another new
year, should feel it a duty to try and
make the present year more peaceable
and profitable than the past. The
people have prospered and the indica
tions are that the present year will
add many rich blessings to the one
jnst closed. Farmers have made good
crops, merchants have done good
business, and prosperity has been
evident in every walk of life, and the
world around us seems to be at ease.
The surroundings are almost perfect,
yet we are never satisfied and will
ever look to the future to bring about
greater prosperity among us. We
live in hopes of something better
farther on. It is not nature for us to
be content, while we labor for it, it
will never be reached and life is spent
in vain efforts to find contentment.
Life after all is what we make it and
it would ba well to start the new year
with a determination to make it belter
than it was during the previous year.

An exchange in speaking of the
varie gifts, says: Among the thou
: sands of published telegrams, describ
ing gifts great and small, two appeal
most strongly to us. One is the report
from Los Angeles of a merchant who
gave a savings-bank account of one
dollar to every newsboy in the city;
the other is a dispatch from New York
telling of a bank which insured the
1 ; lives of all its employes as a rewaid
for faithful service during the year.
Another exchange adds: But Santa
Claus shonld not roam only at Christ
mas. The poor we have always with
us. The helping hand should extend
I itself every day in the year. Theie is
! always some one to help; and the Sal
vation Army, and other organised
' associated charities to make life better,
will dispense charities all through the
year.

A ten-billion-dollar crop for 1913
shows that the farmer is still the back
bone of the country, remirks an ex
change, and all he needs is encourage
ment and the right kind of legislation.
Better marketing facilities are now
needed to bring this great crop to the
people and enable them to get it at a
figure that will lower the greatly in
creased cost of living More land will
be cultivated another year and there
is every likelihood that another bumper
crop will follow improved farming
methods, but until the farmers have
eliminated a lot of the middlemen who j
take toll from everything that passes
through their hands, the ultimate con
sumer, and the farmer himself is
numbered among the ultimate con
sumers, will have to pay higher pricer,
despite the increased supply.
Notice
This is to notify all concerned that
alt service from Alamo to Mcßae will
be cut out after January Ist, 1914 —
only by toll messages. Please be
governed by same.
