Helena Marshal Dies
With Negro in Duel
Helena, January 6-Two, hours
after Marshal H. T, Yancey and Harry
Finch, a negro, fought a pistol duel,
fatal to both, the body of the negro
was hauled to the negro sectionof
town at noon today and burned ona
huge pile of wood that had been gath
ered for that purpose.
Racial trouble as a resultof the
burning is not feared tonmght, though
several negroes have expressed them
selves as displessed with the burning.
The negroes are keeping in their homes
Finch was known as a “‘bad nigner.’
He was alleged to have shot and killed
o deputy sheriff at Jacksonvill on
November 21st.
Las. night at midnight Marshol

at 4 o’clock, this afternoon, received a
telegram askiug him to arrest the
negro, who was on his way from Sa
vannah over the Seaboard and would
reach Helena at eleven-thirty the next
morning. The marshal spotted his
man, commanded him to surrender,
but before he could get the handcuffs
on him the negro had fatally shot the
officer.
The negro had no chance of escape
as he did in the Jacxsonvilie shooting.
With one buliet in his heart and anotk
er in his hand, the marshal drew bhis
pistol and shot the negro six times—
Every bullet took effect.
He stooped over the negro, snapped
the empty gua several times, and
turning to Dr. Maloy he eaid: ‘‘Doc
tor; he hes got me this time,”’ and fell
dead. A crowd of people surrounded
the men during the shooting, but no
one else was hit.
Mr. Yancey leaves a wife and three
small children.
Marshal Giles took the place of the
dead marshal this afternoon, as he had
planned to do before the tragedy.
