The American Flag.
The flag which Huerta must
salute was first unfurled to the
breezes on April 13, 1818. It
then showed twenty stars and
thirteen stripes. The new de
sign was suggested by an act
adopted by congress in 1794, and
the law declaring it the official
banner of the United States was
passed in 1813. The colors
which were hoisted for the first
time over the dome of the capitol
on the date above given were
made by the wife of Captain
Reid, of the navy, who had been
commander of the famous pri
vateer General Armstrong. Dur
ing the ninety-six years which
have elapsed since then the stars
on the national emblem have in
creased from twenty to forty
eight, the territory over which
it floated has expanded until it
stretches' from ocean to ocean
across 4;he American continent,
and the population which bears
allegiance to it lias grown from
ten to a hundred millionsofsouls.
It represents a power and
opulence undreamed of by those
who first hailed its “broad
stripes and bright stars.” An
insult to it challenges the resent
ment and resources of what is
all in all the greatest nation on
earth to-day. —Norfolk Virginian
Pilot.
Following on the heels of the
announcement of J. 0. Booton,
of Marshallville, that he has
green asparagus for sale and
that he intends to sell it for de
livery by parcel post, comes an
nouncement from Bolling Jones,
Postmaster of Atlanta, that the
officers of the United States
Bureau of Animal Industry in
charge of the organization of
Boys' Pig Clubs in Georgia have
made arrangements for an ex
perimental marketing of fifty
home-cured hams by parcel post,
to be sold direct to consumers as
a test of that method of ensuring
the sale of meats grown and
cured by the boys of the Pig
Clubs in Georgia.
Spreading like th- measles —
the story of the twenty-two
wagon loadsof home-cured bacon
brought to market in one day by
Brooks County farmers, which
was given such wide publicity in
the reproduction by the Georgia
Chamber oT Commerce of the
letter from Editor Royal Daniel
of the Quitman Free Press to
President Charles J. Haden of
the Georgia Chamber of Com
merce, is making Brooks County
