GROWTH
Is the Slogan of a Community That now
Has a Chance to Come Into its
New Prosperity.
Pecans, Watermelons, Cantaloupes Oats,
Corn, Cane and Other Commod
ities are Flourishing.
Alamo, the county seat of Wheeler
county, Georgia, is the baby county
seat of the commonwealth, Wheeler
county having been formed about one
year ago. What was a tiny trading
point, sleeping peacefully among the
pines, Alamo woke suddenly with the
new order of things. She now has
600 population and the next twelve
months will see easily double that
number of persons within the muni
cipal confines. The town is one of
the coming home and trade centers
of its section of the state. Its splen
did new brick and stone business
blocks bespeak a start for the larger
things that is highly encouraging.
The building of a new town, espec
ially when that town is a county seat,
is a big matter. But Alamo people
are made of the stuff that knows
neither defeat nor serious setback.
They set themselves to the task of
making a new city, with confidence
in the outcome and joy in the work.
Above all, every man and woman
here knows that their town has a
real future; that its location and rich
surrounding country demands and
will support a large town and that is
the kind of town they have started
out to build.
-The writer believes that one of the
most hopeful signs for the future of
Alamo rests in the signficant fact
that it is not a one-man town. That
is, the place is not largely owned nor
dominated by one single individual.
The field is open and there is a chance
for everybody. No one person has

shown a disposition to try to corner
things and he couldn’t do it now if he
wanted to. There is a disposition all
over the town to live and let live; to
do well and give the other fellow a
fair show if he is the right stuff. And
they have a lot of good people here
who are the simon-pure stuff, too. The
writer believes that he has seldom
been in any small city where there
was such a complete spirit of fair
ness and amity prevalent as here.
This is the more noticeable when one
takes into consideration the fact that
it is a new town and there are many
oportunities for advancement. Every
man seems to think that the other
fellow is a fairly decent sort although
he doesn’t say much about it. They
all just go ahead and hustle and saw
wood.
Alamo is situated 103 miles west
of Savannah on the main line of the
Seaboard Air Line railway, running
between Savannah and Montgomery,
Ala. The close proximity to --Savan
nah insures good city markets, three
hours ride from this city.
The pre-ement possibilities of this
section, and, in fact, all of Wheeler
county, is farming. Lands are al
ready commencing to rise in price,
since the organization of the new
county, which is but normal and natur
al. And these prices will continue to
advance with rapidity. Land now
sells all the way from sl2 per acre
to S4O, according to the location and
improvements. These figures will in
crease with the demand for these

lands that has already been started.
There are many reasons why this
section of Georgia is one of the ban
ner sections of the world in which to
make money. First, there is a soft,
gentle, balmy southern climate un
rivaled in the whole county. It is
one of the very finest regons in the
United States in which to raise stock.
Carrying stock through the winter can
be done at a minimum of cost, because
there are no winters to speak of. Ex
pensive barns and huge winter stores
of feed are unknown, bcause they are
not needed. Cattle and hogs, espec
ially, find their finest environment,
here and there is a distinct movement
manifest toward the raising of live
stock standards.
Alamo has recently voted SIO,OOO
in bonds for the erection of a modern
new school building and the beginning
of a city water system. These bonds
were all bought by a home institution,
the Wheeler County Bank, an unusual
compliment to the city’s standing and
a public-spirited act on the part of the
above excellent institution. This
school building will be constructed of
brick and stone trimmings, will be of
the latest and most approved school
building construction, and will be
ready for occupany with the fall term
of school. The enrollment of pupils
will be approximately 200 at the
opening of the school. The sum of
$6,000 will be spent on the building
alone and $1,500 will be spent on
furnishings. An able principal and a
full corps of trained teachers will be
engaged and when the term begins
all will move forward with the pre
cision of clockwork and the best of
preparedness.
A city well 200 feet has peen drilled
for the water system and a most
superior quality of water, inexhaus
tible in its supply, has been obtained.
The sum of $2,500 will be spent from
the sale of -the above bonds in the in
stallation of a gasoline engine, pump,
the laying of the mains, etc. It is
planned as soon as this work is ac
complished to install at the same
plant a dynomo and begin the new
electric light system, for which no pro-

vision has yet been made.
An election will be held on the 10th
of June, legal steps for the same hav
ing already been taken, to vote on a
bond proposition to build a $30,000
court house, a* SIO,OOO jail, and $20,-
000 for road improvements. The con
summation of these things, together
with the steady growth now under
way, will make of Alamo in a very
short time, one of the finest and most
highly'improved towns in its section.
Alamo has Methodist, Presbyterian,
and Free Will, Primitive and Mission
ary Baptist congregations in its re
ligious circles, all with earnest and
growing congregations. The moral
atmosphere of the town and commun
ity is of the highest and the local cit
izenship is of the very finest brand.
The town has started out to be home
and business center and the people
here have come to stay. It is in every
way a center where the best that is
in people may find an outlet.
Alamo is a fine cotton market, up
wards of 3,000 bales having been
shipped from here last season.
Wheeler county is destined to be
come one of the big pecan raising lo
calities of Georgia. This extremely
profitable crop finds an environment
in this section of the state that is in
peculiar harmony with its productive
nature. There is one planted grove
of 1,000 acres near Alamo which is
just coming into bearing. These are
the wonderful paper shell pecan, the
finest raised. There are many other
groves being planted and the chances
are that the acreage within the next
year will reach into the many thous
ands.
Wheeler county is a banner water
melon county. Last year there was
raised about 300 acres of water-mel
ons and about 150 acres of canta
loupes in the county and the acreage
this year will be much greater.

Editor Wheeler Jounty Eagle:
Will you please allow me space
in your valuable county paper to
state that lam for BONDS for
our courthouse and jail, and I
would favor many thousand dol
lars more than specified for
roads, than is to be "voted on
June the tenth.
Ist, For the reason that we
are far behind the keeping of the
times in our road improvements.
Some of our bordering counties
are making us ashamed of our
selves on the road building prob
lem, as they are pushing for
good roads now. Neighbors and
friends, let’s get busy and vote
bonds and build up our new
county, and be in the catch step
with the best road counties in
the State, and the next time
there is a national highway sur
veyed through the country they
will not surround our county.
Well, would it do us any good to
have such a road? Yes, it would .
make our property worth more
to have such a road, anyway, we
