Freak Orange Ship
ped to Alamo Firm.
Mr. W. L. McMillan, manager
of the mercantile firm of A. J.
Rogers & Company of this place,
opened a box of oranges this
week, in which he found among
the number one that eclipsed
anything known to orange ex
perts in this section. The orange
in question is apparently sound,
but on one side of it the surface
is uneven and shows plainly that
sometime before it matured that
a slice had been cut out of it and
placed pack, not fitting the open
ing berfectly, and hence the
uneaveness of the surface. It
grew to maturity, however, and
is only disfigured as above stated.
The freak is on display at the
Eagle office.
Four Mouths' Bride is
found Dead by Husband.
Douglas, July 27.—When Dr.
John R.Smith went to his wife’s
room this morning to accompany
her to breakfast, he found his
four months’ bride dead in her
night clothes,and by her bedside
were an opened bottle of chloro
form and some absorbent cotton
which had been saturated with
the dangerous liquid. Mrs Smith
had complained early Sunday
night of having a sick headache
and nervousnsess and her
husband gave her several doses
of headache tablets and was
called away. Upon returning
about twelve o’clock he did not
go to his wife’s room, but re
turned to his own. It was this
morning at 9 o’clock before the
doctor knew of her death.
The coroner’s inquest retnrn
•d a verdict that Mrs. Smith
came to her death by an unin

A Pleasant Trip to
The Dairy Farm.
Quite a number of the town
folks were the recipients of the
hospitality of Col. and Mrs.
Hamilton Burch on last Sunday
afternoon, out at the dairy farm,
a mile above town After Sun
day school a large two horse
wagon was sent in to convey the
party over to the farm, where
several tine, cool melons were
served, under the beautiful
shades. After the melon cut
ting cream and cake were served
and all present were made to
feel at home.
The shades of night began to
hover around, and the party
were taken home.
This farm is fitted up with
many conveniences, and the
prettiest bunch of Jersey cows,
fine hogs, chickens and turkeys
that any county might feel proud
of, and Col. Bnrch is continually
adding improvements to the
place. The dairy is fitted up in
the most sanitary manner, and
■is under the personal super
vision of Mr. and Mrs. H. A.
Coleman, which assures its
patrons the very best service-
Few towns the size of Alamo
enjoys the privileges offiered by
this dairy. Every day in the
week its patrons have milk and
butter delivered at their door.

Bale 1914 Cotion.
The gin of S. I. Bullard ginned
the first bale of cotton of the
season today, and the cotton be
longed »o A. L. Spalding,- a
colored farmer living a few miles
above town. Spalding has the
distinction of having ginned the
first bale of cotton in Wheeler
this season. Homer L. McLen
don of the Spring Hill neighbor
hood came first last season, but
instead of July 31st, his came in
on August 14th, two weeks later.
Shortly after Spalding had
made arrangements to have
his bale ginned, A. J. Owens of
near Erick, drove in town with i
dale, which came second in tne
list of the first cotton of the sea
son.
Legislature is
Grinding Slowly
The legislature is more then half
over and up to this time it hasn’t ac
complished enough to make one real
day’s Work. But as one visitor re
marked: “The fewer Laws they
pass the better off everybody will
be. Seema to me that making new
laws means merely making new
crimes.” One biece of legislation
which is almost certain to be passed
before the close is the bill to prevent
attacks on life insurance companies
in Gerogia by irresponsible parties.
There have been so many instances
of receivership suit brought against
life companies merely to harass them,
or to gain someulterior end, that the
business men of the state believe
a remedy is imperative. It is probable
that the bill will be amended to
to provide that a person desiring
to sue for a receiver for an insurance
company will first be required to
confer with the insurance commission
er, the attorney general and the gov
ernor, and on suit shall proceed with
out their approval. —Ex.

Mr. Wimberly’s Address
Quite a number gathered to
hear the speech of Hon. Fre
Wimberly last Saturday after
noon. My. Wimberly is one of
the best posted men of the day,
and during the populist days
was one of the foremost champ
ions of their cause. Though he
has reached his 74th mile post,
he is still vigorous and never
lets an opportunity pass to con
demn those whom he thinks are
wrong and applande those whom
he thinks are right.
Mr. Wiraberlv came over in
the interest of Congressman
Hughes, but it was very evident
that there were other candidates
interest paramount in his mind,
among whom was “Little Joe”
Brown. Misaddress was listened
to with interest by all. His
audience was divided between
Judge Clements and Congress
man Hughes, and nothing was
said to hurt the feelings of friends
of either candidate.
While in town he was enter
tained by Mr. and Mrs. J. D.
Brown He left Sunday morn
ing for bis home In Cochran.

Stable Building.
Tuesday afternoon Sheriff
Wright served the Workmen or.
the building of Mr. S. L. Ful
ford, referred to in our last is
sue, with injunction papers. They
were sworn out by Mr. John
W. Clements, from whom the
property was bought. At the
time Mr, Fulford was in Atlanta,
and work was resumed Wednes
day morning, but the workmen
were notified that if work did
not cease that they would be
held for contempt, and work
was suspended to await the
action of the court.
Considerable headway had
been made on the building. The
brick foundation had about been
completed, a well dug and some
of the material had been placed
on the ground. Just how long
before the question will be set
tled is not known. It is under
stood that bond will be denied in
this case, and until the question
is passed upon the building will
remain as it stands.
