Campaign Drawing |
*
- Rapidly to a Close.
With this issue the campaignlt
of 1914 will come to a close, and
with our next issue we will be
able to chronicle thiough
these columns the victorious
candidates, as well the defeated
ones, or those who ‘‘also ran.”
The candidates have all worked
hard and faithfully, both local
and state, and only after the
votes have been counted will the
successful ones be known. More
than a majority of the offices to
be filled are contested for by two
or more candidates, which must
necessarily mean that in each of
these cases one or more will go
down in defeat,
The people of this county are
‘perhaps more deeply interested
in the representative and con
gressional races than in either
‘of the others, as in both cases
ithe offices are sought by our
!‘uome people. For representa
tive there three aspirants, Messrs
Jerry Johnson, J. D. Brown and
IDr. M. Morrison. These are
three good men, either of whom
would make us a good represen
tative, from whom that will be
\sflected the first representative
of Wheeler county,
In the congressional race much
linterest is felt, as the two candi
{dates for this office, Judge
Walter M. Clements and Con
gressman Hughes, are both well
and favorably known, Judge
Clements having been born and
l reared in this county.

Hughes' Endorsement
of Judge Emory Speer.
Negro Bailiffs. serving in ‘
Speer’s court at that time. |
Cong. Dudley M. Hughes can
not and does rot deny that he
endorsed Judge Emory Speer for
thecircuit court of appeals. He
based his endorsement on the
way he handled the Dodge land
cases and he so stated in his let
ter to the President ot the United
States. He is the only man liv
ing 1 the 12th district who did
endorse Judge Speer at that time
He is the only manin Georgia
who based his endorsement on
the way he handled the Dodge
cases. At the very time he en
dcrsed Judge Speer the names
of the white menin Moutgomery
Telfair, Wilcox, Dodge, etc., had
been taken from the jury box by
Judge Speer and negroes were
serving on the federal jury.
At the time of the endorse
ment he had negro bailiffs in his
;court_, and Mr. Hughes was in a
tposiuon to know this.
[n the face of all these facts,
’ Mr. Hughes’ only defense isthat
heis a life-long friend of Judge
‘ Speer and that the endorsement
was given a tew years ago, as if
‘the fact that it was not given
yesterday detracts from the
eravity of the offense in the least
Dr. D. C. Horton of Milledge
ville, arrived in town Wednes
day morning and has accepted a
position with the Alamo Drug
Company as prescription clerk.
Dr. Horton has had considerable
experience in the drug business
land comes highly recommended
Tax Collector Martin
Forsakes Bondsmen
That the tax collector of this
county, J. A. Martin, has mis
appropriated the state and ccun
ty funds, which were entrusted
to his care, as tax colléector, is no
longer doubted. His bondsmen
have for some time been a little
apprehensive that something
might be wrong, and met and
had his books gone over, and the
shortage was found to be thirty
four hundreéd. ten dollars and
ninety-three cents.
‘ Notwithstandirg tlis fact. he
'held out for a while that his
’bailiffs had not reported on ex
ecutions turned over to them for
collection, and as soon as this
was done he could settle with the
state and county. There was
found to be nothing to this and
he left for parts unknown. His
bondsmen will make good the
shortage. A warrant has been
issued for his arrest.
Judge Clements at Scotland
