working on commission are largely re
sponsible for the recent arbitrary rise
in food prices in Greater New York,
according to a preliminary report sub
in ttef today to the commissioner of
waights and measures. His investiga
tors found that in many cases sales
men urged customer to take on sup
plies,.declaring prices soon would soar
This w*3 especially true as regards
sugar and flour. Retail meat prices
throughout the city are coming down,
it is s aid, in the face of a boycott by
heusewives.
With sugar at war pricas long
•weetening from South Georgia
ought to be in good demand the com
ing fall. i

i I Tax Collector’s Office
Ta be Declared Vacant
It is understood that the
county commissioners will, at
their next regular session, de
clare a vacancy in the office of
tax collector of Wheeler comity,
by reason of disappearance of
present incumbent, J. A. Martin,
whose whereabouts are nnknown
and a deficit of several hundred
dollars has been found in his
account. In this case, however,
it is incumbent upon theordinarv
of the county to appoint some
one to fill the vacancy- It is al
so understood that Mr. Martin
Jenkins has consented to take
the job on a salary basis and
that the collectoe’s commission
due for this service will remain
in the county treasury. Mr.
Jenkins is a good man for the
place and the county weuld be
fortunate to secure his services.
Lightning Destroys
Barn and Contents.
On last Friday, during a severe
thunder storm, lightning struck
the barn of J. T. Jordan, in which
was stored a lot of forage. A
fine mule was also struck and
instantly killed. The loss falls
quite heavy on Mr- Jordan, and
he has the sympathy-of all in
his loss.

counties for long tei m, leaving Joe Brown 8. Harris is easy vin -
ner for governor, Hardman a close second. The short letm sena
torial race lies between Slaton, Felder and Hardwick, at d the win

gressional race, Congressman Hughes carried twehe counties
out of the thirteen, composing the 12th congresMe ral dihiat.
Judge Walter M. Clemens carrying Telfair ccunD Valier was
elected in the 11th and Vinson in the 10th. In the three
cornered race f«r Representative, Hon. John D Brown was elect
ed over his opponents, Dr. M. Morrison and Mr- Jerry Johnson
by 75 votes. The vote being as follows: Brown 395 Morrison 320
and Johnson 153. Col. J.L. Kent of Wrightsville, a relative of
Judge Kent of this place, was elected to fill the unexpired term of
the late K. J. Aawkins, for judge of the superior court Os the Dub
lin circuit, over Col. W- W. Larsen. Jim L, Gillis was elected to
the legislature in Montgomery county over two opponents. The
election passed off quietly,though in many sections heavy rains fell
during the day. Owing to the length of the ticket the count was
sloWwhich delayed the report of the final result.
Death of Mrs. Browning.
On last Saturday Mrs. Brown
ing, wife of Mr- J. W. Browning,
living near Alamo, was stricken
with heart failure and died be
fore medical aid could reach her.
She was apparently enjoying
good health, and her sudden
death was a great shock to her
family and friends. She was
buried Sunday in the family
burying ground, near her home,
Mrs. Browning was a devoted
wife and mother and a consist
ent member of the Methodist
church.
Besides her husband, she is
survived by one son, three
sisters and one brother, Mr. R.
R. McAlum, of thl r place At
the time of her death she Was 64
years of age. The funeral will
be preached during the protrac
ted meeting which begins at
the Adams school house next
webk.
