THROUGHOUT STATE
Athens—The eighth district congres
sional convention met here and for
mally nominated Samuel J. Tribble
for congress for his third f?rm. He
had no opposition in the recent pri
mary and very few times in any of
the fitfeen counties was his name
scratched by the voters. Resolutions
endorsing Congressman Tribble were
passed.
Athens. —D. Weaver Bridges, a
young man in a doctor’s office here,
left here to walk 400 miles to Merid
ian, Miss., where he has been recent
ly awarded a scholarship in the Boys’
college. He went by Atlanta, Birming
ham, Anniston and on to Meridian.
He wore stiff shoes, a canvas suit,
and carried a flashlight, a raincoat and
a smalll kodak and Bible.
Griffin. —The citizens of Griffin and
Spalding county met together with the
stockholders of the Farmers and Mer
chants’ Warehouse company of Grif
fin for the purpose of bonding the
warehouse for the storage of cotton
on receipts to be issued by same for
the benefit of the Griffin territory.
Griffin handled over twenty-three thou
sand five hundred bales of cotton last
year, and there are now warehouse i
facilities ready for 16,000 bales exclu- I
sive of the cotton factories. Resolu- I
tions were passed appointing It. F. i
Strickland, chairman, and H. V. Kell, I
R. H. Drakefl T. P. Bell and C. G.
Mills as a committee with power to
act in makin gall the necessary yar
rangements and incurring alll neces
sary expenses attached to the propo
sition of bending the warehouse for
reception of cotton on storage as col
lateral security.
Calhoun. —There is one person who
is literally “crowing" over the victory
of J. M. Lang of this place, who was
nominated for solicitor general of the
Cherokee judicial circuit in the pri
mary. A baby boy has come to bless
his home. Mr. Lang gained fame in
1912, when he became the father of
twins on the day Wilson and Mar
shall were elected, and, in view of his
being elected from the Seventh con
gressional district, he named them
for the Democratic standard bearers.
A emricus.—The county oommission
ers of Sumter in meeting recalled the
order for election for the proposed is
sue of $200,000 bonds for roads im
provement and bridge building. Un
der evisting financial conditions, to
gether with the usual opposition to
any kind of bonds developing in some
sections of the country, caused the
commissioners to recall the election for
the present, and until a time when
conditions are more favorable.
Macon. —Through a recent amend
ment to the charter of the city of Ma
con authorizing the extension of the
city limits, fifty-four squares, or about
fourteen acres, have been added
to the city, increasing the population
by 5,000 and the taxable values of the
city by one million dollars. Few peo
ple in Macon were aware of this until
a detail statement of the annexation
was given out. The territory annexed
is not located in any one particular
part of the city, but in almost every
part, the city engineer bringing in the
new territory through the straighten
ing out of several jagged lines in the
old corporate limits.
Rome —Hundreds of people gather
ed at Silver Creek to witness an un
usual incident in religious service. The
Rev. D. Mathis, a minister of the Holi
ness sect, administered baptism to his
father, L. P. Mathis. The elder Mathis
was one of a number to be baptized
by the young man. He is 62 years
of age. Not for many years has the
sight of a father being baptized by his
son been witnessed in this section.
Baxley.—David M Parker tendered
his resignation as mayor of the city
of Baxley, giving as his reasons busi
ness affairs. Mr. Parker is serving
his first term and has proven an ex
cellent mayor. Charles W. Melton,
mayor pro tern., will likely succeed
him.
Augtlsta—Judge Henry C. Hammond
has rendered his decision in the
O’Dowd case, wherein M. O’Dowd’s
Sons & Co. have been seeking to hin
der the levee work by retaking prop
erty condemned by the city for that
purpose. Judge Hammond was about
to sign the injunction against the
O’Dowds, making it permanent, but,
on their request, consented to post
pone the permanent injunction for a
month. But the city will probably be
little troubled hereafter along this line.
Albany. — The sixty-eighth annual
convention of the Georgia State Agri
cultural Society, in session here, elect
ed the following officers: Judge John
A. Cobb of Sumter, president; C. H.
Ramsey of Brooks, general vice pres
ident; district vice presidents as fol
lows: Peter W. Meldrim, first district;
W. E. Harvin, second district; H. E.
Stockbridge, fifth district; W. G. Mid
diebrooks, sixth district; George R.
Hutchens, seventh district; Charles M.
Sneling, eighth district; Sam C. Dun
lap ninth district; George Gilmore,
tenth district; Dr. W. B. Burroughs,
eleventh district; Martin V. Calvin of
Waycross was elected secretary.

were discussing the likelihood of an
invasion of Mexico by the National
Guard. Cheerful remarks abput the

Civic Service for Children.

apace and the youngsters have taken
effective part in many a “swat the
fly” campaign or “cleanup” day. The
American Civic association has recent
ly organized a department of Junior
Civic leagues under the chairman
ship of Maude Van Buren. It aims to
develop good citizenship by empha
sizing the spirit of civic service and
familiarizing the children with the
simple municipal ordinances which af
