County Tax Rate.
The tax payers of Wheeler
county can congratulate them
selves on the tax rated levied by
the county commissioners Tues
day, of thirteen dollars and fifty
cents on the thousand. The state
tax rate has been reduced one
haff mill on the thousand dollars
this year, making the slight
increase in the county rate, to
gether with the decreas in the
state rate about equal to the rate
last year. By refernce to the i
advertisemet in this issue will J
be seen levies for the various i
expenses of the county. To 1
build and complete the court <
house, a levy of ten mills was j
made, This is a great showing i
for a young county to make, J
and far better than many in this
part of the state. After the
county has completed all her
building, it is reasonable that
the tax rate in this countv will
be very small. The manner in
which our commissioners are
handling the expenses of the
county should be appreciated by
the tax payers and will be, we
feel sure.
Paris in Most Serious Mood
Paris, the capital of France,
noted the world over for its
fashions and its gaiety, is now
in its most serious mood. A
sombre atmosphere hangs as a
veil over the city. This beauti
ful city is in danger of German
invasion. The armies of the
Kaiser are now within a short
distance of the city and are daily
pressing forward. This may
mean that Paris will soon be be
sieged by the Germans
On other pages of the Eagle
will be found what has trans
pired in the great European war
during the past week.
Through the kindness of Mr.
J. Kelhe Simmons, editor of the
Telfair Entrprise, at Mcßae, we
were enabled to get our paper
out last week. Therollerson our
newspaper press melted on us
too late in the weea to have them
repaired in time for the last
issue of the Eagle, and Brother
Simmons came to our rescue,
tendering his press and
necessary help that enabled us
to get out., which we appreciate
very much and if ever an oppor
tunity arises whereby we can
return this favor it will be our
pleasure to do so.
