Let's Have Bur Band
In Pi adice again
About a year ago a number of
our musically inclined and enter
prising young men organized a
band and procured a good set of
instruments, but the factof their
not having an instructor that
could be with them but occasion
ally and then at such a large ex
pense, forced the boys to give
up their practice.
We now have with us an old
band teacher with a lifetime ex
perience in teaching, having
played in some of the best bands
and under the best instructors
in the country. If our bovs wish
to resume practice again he is
ready and willing to render them
all the assistance in his power to
put them m a position that they
can play a fairly good grade of
music in a few weeks- His being
located here will enable the boys
to meet as often as they wish,
and the band room is an enjoy- :
able place to while away the long!
winter evenings, besides the in-!
structions they receive in music. '
‘ Onward and Upward” is Al
amo’s motto, and one of the best
onward steps lor a country town
is a good band composed of its
young men who delight in its
thrift and prosperity. In a few
years the mantle of responsibility
for the town’s welfare will fall
upon their shoulders as the pres
ent generation passes away, and
the spirit of their first, efforts
will be but as seeds sown for its
future success.
Aside from the many enjoy
ments to be derived, the band
also has its pecuniary advantages
to our business men. In the
pleasant summer evenings when
they advertise an open air con
cert our rural population will
drive in for miles around to lis
ten to the music, ar d when here
there is always something which
is needed either in the household
or upon the farm, and our mer
chants thereby pi ofits bv their
patronage. And there’s the
the young man who brings his
ll best girl’’ in by his side. She
always thinks of soda water and
ice cream, and we are sure none
of our young men are so hard
hearted as to refuse to have his
"‘fair one” partake of these lux
uries
So let's have the band as there
is no use in the instruments re
maining idle «hen so much en
joyment can be derived from
them. If the boss desire to ie
organize and wi i call at this of
fice they can m ko the acquaint
ance of * teacu. r and talk the

Kills Brother-In-Law;
Charged With Murder
1 Dublin, Oct. 19.—Thomas Wilkes, a
| young white man 19 years of age, is in
j jail here on the charge of killing his
; ' brother-in-law, Willie Lee .Grier, in a
I family fuss Saturday night at the home
|of his mother, Mrs. Mattie Wilkes.
| Wilkes, it is claimed, used a shot gun
lat close range, and the entire load en
! tered Grier’s breast, tearing a hole as
1 large as a dollar through his oody and
killing him in a few moments.
Grier and his wife had been separat
ed for several months, but lately he
had been going to see her regularly
once a week at the home of her moth
er, and they had about settled their
differences, it is said Saturday night
when he called he was told by his sis
ur in-law that his wife was at the
; home of a relative near by. Grier
went to that place and found his wife
was not there but was at the home of
her mother.
Going back, he went into the house,
according to Wilkes’ statement, after
he had threatened to tear down the
door if not admitted, and bad abused
Wilkes’ sister considerably. After en
tering the house he continued to abuse
the girl and advanced on her with a
knife Wilkes was in the room with a
shot gun and drew Grier's attention,
and he at once made for Wilkes, with
the knife, whereupon Wilkes fired in
self defense, according to his state
ment. Grier walked across the room
and entered the room adjoining, where
he fell dead. A small pocket knife,
unopened, was on the floor beside him
^hen he was found, and it is the opin
ion of Grier’s friends that he did not
take his knife from his pocket until
after he was shot.
Wilkes gave himself up to the sher
iff, Grier was the son of R. T Grier
and a nephew of City Court. Sheriff B.
M. Grier, and was 36 years of age.
Wins Foot Ball (lame.
! Brewton Parker Institute wins easily
' from South Georgia College, score 19
|to 0. The victory is to be credited to
| the entire team of the victors, as the
; playing in each position was strong and
effective. The B. P. I. team showed
a decided improvement on the playing
of the week before when thev Were de
feated by Douglas. The back field
made repeated gains throughout the
entire game, meaning much to the re
sult. The Mcßae team showed lack of
form and ability to hit the line hard.
Their continue:! fumbling often caused
I the loss of the ball and of much terri
i tory. At no stage of the game was
! the B. P. I. goal threatened by the
I losers. The game was marred by a
j continued, show of dissatisfaction with
I the referee who seemed to lack knowl
i edge of the game and ability to enforce
| his decisions.
These two teams meet again on the
26th of this month on trie B. P. 1.
grounds. H. L. Batts,
Mgr. B. P. I. Team.
Will Allen, our colored far
mer, not satisfied with present
. ing us with the finest stalk of su
gar cane last week that we have
seen this year, has again brought
us something that beats anything
i ever heard of. He came into the
office the other day carrying a
i chain in his hand over a foot long
J with something dangling from
1 the end of it. Our first thought
'! was of possum in a trap but in
; vestigation revealed our mistake.
:It appears that in planting his
sweet potatoes the piece of chain
lay near where the potato was
to grow. After the potato had
reached the length of five inches
it started through a link of the
chain and grew on the other side
of the link to nearly the size of
j a hen's egg. Then it turned to
' a right angle going t hrough an
' j other link and growing a good
{size potato on the other side of
I that link, so there are two links
। imbedded in the potato. Now
j We are wandering what curiosity
j Alien will have to bting us next
j week, as he at>i>ears t» be full ’ (
• suen trjexs. The potato is on ex
hibition at this office.
