grow more bushels of corn to the
acre than can the farmers in tlie
so-called Corn belt of Illinois and
lowa, for the South’s climate is
pre-eminently a corn climate

ern far mers can raise cottie, hogs
and sheep cheaper than can far
mers in other sections of the
country, because long crop-grow
ing seasons mean longer pastur
ing, less feeding ;.nd cheaper
forage. Southern truck garden
ers, by means of multiple farm
ing—that is, growing from three
to five or more crops a year on
the same land —make much more
money from each acre than the
truck gardener of the East, North
and West. This, the Southern
farmer is able to do because of
his longer crop-growing season.
Southern orchards produce finer
fruit with more certainty than is
produced elsewhere, because the
South’s climate minimizes frost
peril and the South’s abundant
moisture makes irrigation unnec
essary. so that water logged
fruit is not produced.
