Where Are We Drifting?
President Wilson has ordered
the American troops to be with
drawn from Vera Cruze Nov. 23
and let the Mexicans tight it out
among themselves. He has also
given permission for the Mexi
can catholic priests and nuns to
accompany them Just why he
and Bryan should show so much ,
preference to this particular de- 1
nomination when they have both
professed to be protestants it is
hard for the public to under
stand. Both have catholic sec
retaries and no protestant school
is good enough for Bryan so his
son must attend a catholic insti
tution. Some of our former pres- !
idents have also had the same
tendencies. Taft especially so. !
He caused three million dollars
to be set off to the catholics for 1
schooling the child)en of the ■
Phillipine Islands in that faith,
and in one of his speeches in
Pennsylvania he said he was glad
to see the catholic religion so ।
thoroughly introduced, as it was
the best religion that could be in
troduced into any new country.
Toe only plausible excuses for
this preference that the public
can give is that these office seek- '
ers apparently realize that the
catholics hold the balance of pow- j
er and that before they can be <
elected they must pledge them- '
selves to do the bidding of the <
pope. This has also shown itself
in the Macon convention. Gar- <
field and McKinley were fouly
murdered by members of this ।
religion and Roosevelt was also
wounded, but he was rushed to
a catholic hospital and the mat
ter hushed up It may be fear
of meeting the same late that
causes the present administra- 1
tion to lend all its aid and cater
to every demand made upon it
by this particular sect, but at the
best it is having a bad impression
upon loyal American citizens, and
leads us to inquire ‘‘Where are
we drifting.”
