The Question of
Fire Prevention
The question of Fire Preven
tian at this time is especially per
tinent, and the results of sus
taining a loss, in view of the trials
through which business is pass
ing, would be more severe than
normally. Afire now not only
means a property destroyed, or a
business ruined, but the loss of a
plant which it Would at this time
bo most desirable to have in ser
vice, and one which likely could
/ not be replaced.
Commodities are selling for
more than they were a short time
back, and a merchant cannot r -
stock his shelves at the si.me
cost. In man,y lines he cannot
replace bis goods at all. Build
ing material, low at present, is
advancing gradually, and to re
build will be more expensive.
Machinery is hard to get, and im
ported designs cannot be had at
all. Cotton is slowly gaining in
value, and its destrution means
actual loss of money, and pros
pective loss of profit.
Somqof the largest concerns
in the country are calling their
employees’ attention to the need
of unusual care. A job lost now
means no pay check, no is other
employment frequently to be
had. Remember, there are many
out of work.
The losses by fire for the coun
try have increased this year, and
should a conflagration occur the
existing financial and banking
conditions would produce unusu
al results, and the fire insurance
companies with the stock mark
ets closed would be unable to
finance a loss of conflagration
magnitude, no matter what sac
rifices they might be willing to
mike in order to meet their obli
gation promptly.
In a period covering approxi
mately two weeks there have oc
jeurred nine fires in the State of
। Georgia, in which was burned
7,622 bales of cotton. This means
about $262,000 which, in the end
must, every dollar of it, be paid
by the public, and had this cot
ton not been destroyed it would
have been worth at the quotations
of the past week from $25,500 to
$33,000 more. An actual money
'loss to the owner both wavs.
The majorit' o* the cot tori tires
have been due to careles*n«-s
--to smoking and to the storing of
bales on fire from the gin. There
is no possible excuse for matches
or smoking around a cotton ware
house Afire will smoulder in
The interior of a cotton bale for
idays, often without any external
evidence. If no b ile was per
mitted to get into the warehouse
■ until it had been at least 2-1 hours
! out of the gin, many poor people
I would not have lost their coibm.
It is the duty of every one, he he
i householder or employee, to take
every wise precaution to prevent
! tire and its dire results at il
i tunes, particularly seat present
