EMORY PRESIDENT
SAYS HEALTH WEEK
’ GREATEST MOVE
Health Education Week, May S to
W. is hailed by Dr. Harvey W. Cox,
president of Emory University, as a
work than which none can pay great
er dividends to individual, community
and state. Dr. Cox urges that every
one In the state take it as a personal
matter, giving it their most serious
consideration.
"The medical department of Emory
University is looking forward with
great interest to Health Education
Week.’’ said Dr. Cox. "From May 6
through May 13, this week will be
observed in more than 100 localities
throughout the state In an effort to
promote health examinations and
health education. This work Is under
the auspices of the Medical Associa
tion of Georgia, the Georgia State Den
tal Society, the State Board of Health,
the medical departments of Emory and
the University of Georgia and the
Georgia Tuberculosis Association.
"The fact that 61 per cent of our
people die of preventable diseases be
fore their allotted time Is sufficient
evidence that wo should give the ques.
tlon of health our serious considera
tion. I sincerely hope that every per
son In Georgia will give his hearty
support to this movement for better
health. I do not know any work that
could give greater returns to tho in
dividual, community and state."
HEALTH EDUCATION
। WEEK GREAT MOVE,
SAYS ABERCROMBIE
i That the attention of every person
in Georgia will be focused on Health
Education Week, May S to 19, is the
hope of Dr. T. P. Abercrombie, state
commissioner of Health, expressed in
indorsing unreservedly the period of
health activity planned by an amal
gamatloa of health forces in the state.
"I don't know of a state in the
Union," said Dr. Abercrombie, "so
blessed that every single force for
health has coordinated to foster a
movement of health education. I am
confident that this Health Education
Week, under leadership of the Medical
Association of Georgia, and participat
ed In by the Georgia State Dental So
ciety, the medical departments of
Bmory and the University of Georgia,
the Georgia Tuberculosis Association
and the State Board of Health, will be
most productive of good for Georgia.
“Let me urge that every citizen of
Georgia man, woman and child, give
thought during this week to their
health. I mean real, serious thought.
Have yourself checked over and see
that you are right. You do this for
your automobile every month or so.
Te have your own body chocked
over once a year is not an extrava
guice. It Is a necessity.
"Learned doctors and laymen will
convey messages on health during
Health Education Week. Listen to
them, for they are fraught with much
for you that will make life worth Hr-

programs of the Masonic Convention

greatly appreciated by our workers In
public health. In fact they are always

mined to purvey pure food to the

maxim “safety first." They have
met this "problem” of opening a tin
can, however, with the invention of
can openers which cut off tbe lid
cleanly, and open all cans with un
believable ease.
In order to retain all their good

of about 98 per cent steel and 2
per cent tin. Thus a tin can is really
not a tin can at all, but simply a
stout steel cylinder with a coating
of tin. It is a diminutive boiler
which has to be able to withstand
heavy interior pressure.
Good For Many Years
Bessemer steel or open hearth
steel of the highest grade and very
low in carbon is used for the manu
facture of these steel cylinders. It
is rolled into flat sheets, and then
coated with tin before it is fashioned
into cans. There is nothing in this
composition of steel and tin which
is detrimental to human health, and
there is every element to keep the
food it encloses pure and safe. Can
ned foods have been opened, tested
and eaten after the lapse of many
decades and found to be in perfect

Are You Perplexed By
One Os These Common
Beauty Problems?
IMSNK'iS answer personally
every beauty inquiry I receive,
but so many of you have writ
tea to me about the same beauty
problems that today I want to
answer a few of these typical
questions here. I know that many
of you who have not written to
me" yet also must be bothered
with the same problems:
E. B. writer. "The skin on my
eyelids and under my eyes is
drawn and dry. What can I do
about thill”
Reply. Never go to bed with
out applying plenty of tissue
cream or skin food all around
your eyes. This cream will be
absorbed during the night, and
will help the oil glands in your
skin to perform their natural
function of keeping your skin
soft and lubricated. Nothing
shows age so quickly as this dried
up condition of the eyelids, and
nothing is so easy to prevent if
vou will use tissue cream or skin
food every night.
M. ft. P. inquires: "What can I
do about my elbows! They are
becoming rough and hard.”
Reply. Brush your elbows with
a firm but not too stiff hand brush
when you bathe. This will re
move the little hardened bits of
skin that tend to form. Every
night put a bit of akin food or
•tissue cream into the palms of
your hands and rub it into your
elbows. This will keep your skin
soft and smooth. Then, before
going out in the evening apply
powder lotion te your elbows.
T. D. S. writes: “My skin is
very dry, and I am afraid that
frequent bathing, especially dur
ing cool weather, will take toq
much oil out of my skin.” •
Reply. Be sure to use a pure, ■
mild soap. Then after your bath
always rub your body with muscle
oil. This will stimulate your skin,
and help to prevent it from be
coming too dry.
M. S. G. asks: “How can I pre
vent a shiny nose?”
Reply. Shiny noses often occur
because the skin is inclined to be
oily. After cleansing your skin
thoroughly with cleansing cream,
wash your face with warm water
and a pure, mild soap. Then
tighten your pores with a mild
astringent before applying foun
dation cream, powder and rouge.
A good astringent will tighten up
your skin and prevent too much
oil coming out on your face to
spoil the lovely, smooth effect for
which you are striving.
Besides this external treatment,,
oily skins usually require _ some
definite treatment from the inside-
Incorrect diet has much to do
with oily skins, and as a rule
cutting .down op sweets and
starches will help to cure this
condition. I would not adviser
you to begin a strenuous diet with
out first consulting your doctor,
but you can safely use a little
care in selecting your food.
