R. T. Hedeman, the popular pastor
of St. Mark's Reformed Church,
is leaving his native heath this
summer for a two-months lecture
tour across country io the Pacific
coast and back. He will speak in
thirty cities on "Time and the
Calendar,” featuring his current
enthusiasm for calendar reform
as an economic necessity in the
modern streamlined international
world. For twenty years he has
been instructor in public speak
ing at the Baltimore College of
Commerce.
NEW PEACHES
The U. S. Department of Agricul
ture field laboratory at Fort Valley
announces two new varieties of
peaches for the South’s warmer
peach country. The new varieties
are Redcap and Hiland. Both are
clingstone varieties and are adapted
chiefly to areas where winters are

FORT VALLEY, July 18.—James
L. Goram, Alamo, member of the
Glenwood NFA Chapter, is one of
12 New Farmers of America to re
ceive a cash award in the NFA Win
ter Grazing Contest sponsored by
the Georgia Power Company.
The award will be presented at
the State NFA Convention on Thurs
day at the State NFA Camp John
Hope, Fort Valley, by Bud S. Moss,
rural division manager of the Geor
gia Power Company, Atlanta.
As winner of first place in his area,
James will be presented a cash
award of $25.
The New Farmers of America are
Negro farm boys studying vocational
agriculture in high school. Georgia
is divided into six federations or
areas in which the Negro vocational
agricultural program is adminis
tered.
There were 116 NFA members par
ticipating in the contest this year,
and they planted 329 acres of winter
grazing. On these pastures the
seeds used predominantly were 10,-
504 pounds of oats, 753 pounds of
rye grass, 1,175 pounds of crimson
clover, 310 pounds of fescue, 135
pounds of lespedeza, 78 pounds of
ladino clover, and 545 pounds of
vetch.
Predominant fertilizers used in
cluded 45,831 pounds of commercial
fertilizer, 5,000 pounds of super
phosphate, 15,710 pounds of nitrate
of soda, 48,485 pounds of basic slag,
2,000 pounds of lime, and 37,500
pounds of manure.
First place winners in each of the
six areas were Willie King, Wilkes
County Training Chapter, Rayle;
Richard Williams, Cousins Com
munity Chapter, Millen; Larry Ed
wards, FOwlstown Chapter; Thomas
Whitehead, Vienna H & I Chapter,
Unadilla; James L. Goram, Glen
wood Chapter, Alamo; and Bennie
Owens, Zebulon-Concord Chapter,
Zebulon.
Placing second in each area were
Emanuel Cooper, Rosenwald High
Chapter, Watkinsville; Leroy Amer
son, Jefferson County Training
Chapter, Bartow; Fred Daniels, Car
ver High Chapter, Jakin; Joseph
Haugabrooks, Flint River Chapter,
Montezuma; Robert Holmes, Brook
let Chapter; and Richard Holloway
Barnesville Chapter. First and sec
ond place winners received $25 and
$12.50 cash awards respectively.
