LEE AND JACKSON
The week of January 19th-25th contains the birth
day anniversaries of both Robert E. Lee and Thomas J.
Jackson, probably the two most famous military lead
ers of the Confederacy and among the' ablest soldiers
produced by an English-speaking nation. It can ac
curately be said that the two men earned immortality
even while losing a war.
It is a tribute to General Lee that his achievements
are now recognized by the people in every section of
the country. A man who abhorred war, who had freed
his slaves before the outbreak of war, Lee brought out
the finest qualities in men under his command. He
was a matchless military leader, who could have com
manded the armies of either side in the historic con
flict.
Like many men of his day, Lee felt his first duty
lay with his state, and although he sincerely regretted
secession, he decided to stand with his state in the
struggle which ensued.
In Jackson, Lee found a military leader who need
ed few instructions and who exploited every opening
with boldness and speed. The combination of Lee s
strategy and Jackson’s brilliant tactical exploits was a
force which few military commanders, of any day could
have withstood. Jackson won his nickname of Stone
wall” in the first Battle of Bull Run.
At one point, when Southern troops were breaking
under the charge of heroic Federals, Jackson refused to
give ground. Gen. Bernard E. Bee cried out to his own
troops, “There is Jackson standing like a stone wall”.
The Confederates rallied and finally won the battle.
General Lee proved a great Amrican in more spheres
than the military field. He became a great educator
after the war, was a great force in soothing the bitter
ness, and in healing the wounds of the nation following
the war. Always a beloved leader in the South, he was
a respected and admired leader in every section. It is
said of him that no army he commanded ever ruthless
ly destroyed possessions in invaded territory.
One symbol of the solidarity which now unites this
country is the tribute universally paid men like Lee and
Jackson. Great military leaders have often fought on
the losing side and been forgotten. Great men are re
membered, whether they won or lost, and into this cate
gory Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson fall.
ADVICE FROM THE HEART (ASSOCIATION)
The American Heart Association recently gave a bit
of advice to all those who would avoid death from break
downs of the heart and blood vessels between now and
the end of March. Each year during the season be
tween now and March 21st, heart and blood vessel fail
ures increase about thirteen per cent.
The main cause for this is that more pneumonia,
bronchitis and other illnesses put a greater strain on
the heart and circulation. Also, the A.H.A. points out,
certain winter activities demand greater physical exer
tion than other seasonal activities. These include stok
ing the furnace and pushing off stalled cars, among
other things.
The advice of the A.H.A., if you would take good
care of your heart, is as follows:
1. Avoid self-diagnosis.
2. Avoid over-exertion.
3. Get plenty of rest.
4. Avoid over-weight.
5. Avoid infections.
6. Don’t worry.
JANUARY AND POLIO
If you think back a few weeks, to 1952, you may ■
recall in that year the country experienced the largest ;
polio epidemic in its history. More than 56,000 people
were struck down by the disease —a total which exceeds .
highway fatalities by many thousands. ’
It is true that in 1952, also a vaccine was tentative- i
ly approved, which seems to immunize most of those
who are given the serum. However, there is only a lim
ited supply of the immunization and residents in most ;
areas of the country cannot expect £o see this new wea
pon used against polio in their communities soon.
It seems then that the March of Dimes, the request
for donations by the National Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis during the month of January, is unusually ap
propriate this year. It comes when new discoveries may
be on the horizon, thus making this year’s victims even
greater tragedies, in away, than before. Surely, the ।
preventative is foreseeable in the near future and every
donation at present will help to spur the discovery of <
the final solution and help those afflicted to recover as 11

rapidly as possible in the interval between now and the
final answer to poliomyelitis.
It should be unnecessary to urge anyone to contri
bute to the March of Dimes. A reminder might be
needed, but, in view of the facts cited above, that is all
which should be necessary for you to do your part before
the end of January.
