Governor Marvin Griffin’s purge
®f .several State employees for
supporting Lieut.-Governor Ernest
Vandiver had its beginning while
lire "writer was on vacation, with
last week’s column written and
left to be mailed. Consequently,
we’re a week late in taking cog
nizance of developments. The
week’s delay, however, has served
to clarify the situation to a great
extent, and we present herewith
the interpretation of political ob
.aservers as to the whys and were-
•fores of the purge.
Contrary to the expectations of
“This writer, and many others, the
Governor is definitely taking an
active part in the campaign to de
feat Vandiver. If in no other way,
he proved this when we fired Ad
jutant-General Hearn, General
Flynn and Colonel Carter, all of
whom are Vandiver supporters,
though Hearn wasn’t actually do
ing any politicking. If the Gover
,ner is really sincere about his
"no politicking” by anybody, he’ll
fire file two or three Department
’Beads in his administration who
are openly working for Lawson.
The abrupt firing of Hearn,
Flynn and Carter was an act of
gross ingratitude on Marvin Grif
fin’s part. Each of these men
worked hard for Griffin’s election
an 1954 and has remained loyal to

In this darkened day this portrait can speak to
men and give them renewed hope and courage.
This masterpiece is the greatest religious painting
•f our day. Not only is this picture a work of
art but, in our homes will become an inspiration
for a more abundant life.
You can render a Christian service to yourself,
your family and friends by hanging this master
piece in your home.
This conception of the Christ was the outgrowth
of a desire on the part of the artist to portray
the Savior in a manner that would embrace more
of the qualities of perfection that the Son of God
must possess.

him personally. The fact that they
are supporting Vandiver for gov
ernor in the ’SB election was only
common sense on their parts, since
the Lieutenant-Governor is a sure
winner and they, naturally, want
fed to be on the winning side.
Governor Griffin showed a far
different attitude than Harman
Talmadge, who, in 1954, fired
none of his loyal employees and
friends, even though quite a few
of them supported Tom Linder
and Fred Hand, when Tlamadge,
himself, was turning every stone
he could to elect Griffin. Loyalty
to his friends has always been
one of Herman’s chief attributes.
Governor Griffin, though, is
reported to be obsessed with the
idea of building up a personal po
litical machine with which to
challenge Senator Richard B. Rus
sell. He is said to figure, natural
ly, that Vandiver, who is related
to Russell, would use all his in
fluence as Governor, in Russell’s
behalf. Consequently, the first
step is to beat Vandiver.
But, so we are told, Vandiver’s
bandwagon was being pushed so
high by State employees that the
Governor realized something had
to be done fast, or there was no
need for Mr. Lawson to even run.
Hence the decision to fire a few
folks and put the quietus on
Vandiver talk around the Capitol.

There isn’t any question but
what that result has been accom
pished. It’s hard to hear a peep
out of those employees who have
heretofore been talking Vandiver
loud and strong. They’re still for
the Lieutenant-Governor, but they
figure it’s foolish to get kicked off
the payroll until the race actually
starts. Come next July, though,
the Governor is going to have to
recruit a new set of Department
and Division heads, if he fires
everybody who joins the Vandi
ver campaign.
' However, the rumor is going
around that there will be some
more firing soon. The next three
on the list, according to reports,
are John Quillian, Member of
the State Highway Board; Fulton
Lovell, State Game and Fish Com
missioner; and Pete Wheeler, Di
rector of the State Department of
Veterans Service. The writer has
no knowledge of anything either
of these men has done in the way
of politicking for either Vandiver

Medicine in Space
The launching of our Earth’s first
artificial moon is now scheduled for
next year. This project, undertaken
as part of the International Geo
physical Year, marks man’s first
step into interplanetary space—and
scientists are already making plans
for manned vehicles to follow.
Medical scientists in particular
are studying the problems which
the human body will have to meet
in the airless void
between planets.
At the School of
Space Medicine at
Randolph Field,
Texas, U. S. Air
Force scientists
under the direc
tion of Dr. Heinz
Haber are testing
men’s reactions to heavy accelera
tion pressures, the possible effects
of cosmic rays, and the problems
of living inside a sealed environ
ment.
One of the toughest questions of
space medicine is how man will re
act to free fall —a situation in
which he has no weight. It is pos
sible to create such conditions on
Earth for only a few seconds at a
time, but in space men will be sub
jected to them most of the time. If
the result is simply vertigo, that
can be dealt with by such anti-dizzi
ness drugs as Bonamine. But many
research workers suspect that total
weightlessness may result in nearly
total confusion of the senses. No
final answer to this question is ex
pected until man has actually un
dertaken the great adventure itself.
The time is coming faster than
many people realize, however. An
unmanned, instrument - carrying
rocket will circle the Moon some
time during the next five years, ac
cording to experts George Gamow
and Krafft Ehricke — and the man
carrying vehicle will not be far
behind.
or Lawson, but they are all three
close friends of Herman Talmadge
and were very strong supporters
of Marvin Griffin in 1954. With
the Governor’s present attitude,
perhaps those qualifications are
all that’s needed to bring the axe
down.
In regard to the Governor’s can

The other day, Bill suddenly
announced that he just had to
have a workshop. “And while I’m
at it,” he decided, “I’ll fix up the
basement—tile the floor and put
up some wood paneling —make it
into a real game room. How about
that?”
“I don’t want to curb your
enthusiasm," 1 replied, "but need
I remind you that your golf bag
mildewed down there ? Our base
ment is so damp, we could grow
mushrooms in tt!”
"It so hap
pens, my dear,
that I think of
everything,”
Bill grinned.
“Before I buy
a foot of pan
el ing, we’re
getting an
RCA Whirl-
pool dehumidifier.”
“A what?” I yelped, visualizing
a monstrous machine.
Bill explained patiently that
this appliance doesn’t look like a
machine at all. I was relieved
when he described a compact
green and gold cabinet less than
18 inches high.
"If it’s that small,” I suggested,
"maybe we need two."
Bill laughed at my ignorance.
"Hardly! This dehumidifier re
moves over three gallons of
moisture from the air a day—
enough to control the humidity
in a room 40 by 30 feet And it
can be hooked up to a drain to
dispose of the accumulated Water.
Incidentally, it’s mobile, too.
Rolls on casters so you can take
it where you need it."
Well, who am I to talk myself
out of a game room? We’ll get
the tile and the wood paneling
as soon as we get that dehu
.midifier.

But we’ve always been resur
rected. We still think a lot of
Marvin Griffin, personally, and
we have no intention of putting
our sued on a personal basis. We
have never written a line of criti
cism about Griffin, until this col

himself, expects to cut throats
without getting a little of it in
return.
Marvin Griffin has contributed
a great deal to the progress and
welfare of this State and its peo
ple. If he will forget this obses
sion of taking over Georgia poli
tics and naming his successor in
office, he can still go down in his
tory as one of the State’s great
governors. His strongest support
ers in Georgia, most of whom are
for Vandiver, will agree that his
present course is fool hardy and
politically suicidal.
Next week’s column will report
what the politicans believe to be
the coming re-alignment of. Geor
gia political factions.
Speakers Named
For Second Annual
Poultry Institute
A score of speakers represent
ing 11 different states is sched
uled to participate in the second
annual Georgia Poultry Institute
to be held at the Rock Eagle 4-H
Club Center, August 19-22.
Arthur Gannon, poultryman,
Agricultural Extension Service,
said the affair last year attracted
about 500 persons. “Poultrymen
are invited to bring their fami
lies along with them to this meet
ing. A program of instruction and
entertainment is being planned
for the entire family,” Gannon
pointed out.
The institute is sponsored by
the poultry division of the Col
lege of Agriculture at the Uni
versity of Georgia.
In adfdition to the'regular ses
sion, two other annual poultry
meetings are planned. The Geor
gia Poultry Improvement Associa
tion luncheon meeting is at 11:45
a. m. Tuesday, August 20. At the
same hour on the next day, the
Georgia Egg Association will hold
an annual meeting.
. Registration for the institute
begins at 1 p. m. Monday, Au
gust 19.
The first session of the insti
tute will get underway at 8:45
Tuesday morning. The pros and
cons of bulk feeding, economics
of automatic feeding of broilers,
compulsory federal inspection of
poultry, and the use of antibiotics
in keeping food fresh are topics to

Summer Without Joy
Thousands of Americans get no
joy out of summer. For them it
means sleepless nights and agoniz
ing hours gasping for breath. Many
are forced to spend their vacations
in bed, so oppressive is the pollen
filled air of summer for victims of
bronchial asthma.
Even the coming of autumn
brings no relief to some sufferers.
Dr. Robert P. McCombs, professor
of postgraduate
medicine at Bos
ton’s Tufts Uni
versity, reports
that worry and
emotional upsets
can trigger as
thma attacks just
as serious as those
caused by pollen.
Indeed, in many cases anxiety is di
rectly linked with the disease.
Fortunately, asthma attacks —
even those aggravated by anxiety -
can often be controlled with modern
drugs. One of the newest develop
ments, for example, combines a
tranquilizer with a hormone. Called
Ataraxoid, the drug is designed to
relieve the annoying symptoms of
asthma and at the same time, ease
the patient’s fears.
Doctors caution against placing
heavy, dust-catching rugs in the
bedrooms of asthma patients. In
stead of waxing floors, gloss them
with furniture polish mixed with
mineral oil to keep down the dust.
Try to maintain room tempera
ture near 70 degrees. Keep the air
moist with a vaporizer or steam ket
tle. Doctors often advise asthma pa
tients to eat light, easily-digested
foods during acute attacks because
heavy foods hamper breathing.
How New Power-X With X-Chomfeot Works:
Sinclair’s exclusive X-Chemieal does
what other additives fail to do. It elimi
nates power-robbing engine deposits,
thereby increasing power in older care
— retaining peak power in new cars.
Other gasoline additives, intended to
combat spark plug fouling and pre
ignition, actually build up harmful de
posits of their own. But Sinclair’s new
X-Chemical has none of these damag
ing after-effects.
THIS RARE CHEMICAL ATTACKS
HARD, CRUSTY DEPOSITS
CHANGES THEM INTO HARM
LESS, POWDERY MATERIAL.
After just three tankfuls of new Super-
Premium Power-X, you can feel the
improvement in performance — pro
vided you do not mix it with other gas
oline. See your Sinclair Dealer and
power up with New Power-X.

Attention will be turned to
broilers — management, breeding,
diseases, and nutrition —at the
afternoon session of Tuesday’s
program.

poultry breeding, breeding sys

tests will be discussed.
Egg production again will have
the limelight on Thursday’s pro
gram.
A poultry parade, featuring
“Chickens and Eggs — Plain ’N
Fancy,” will be presented for the
ladies attending the institute.
Five home economists, from as
many commercial companies, will
be on hand for personal confe
rences after they give an infor
mal program on how to use mod
ern equipment, demonstrating
the use by showing new and in
teresting ways of preparing chick
en and eggs.
Movies, swimming, organized
games, horseshoes, and crafts will
be on tap to hold the children’s
attention while their parents lis
ten to talks and attend meetings,
and watch demonstrations of in

available free and others may be
rented by the day. A state fish
