I TALES OUT OF SCHOOL
J BY BERNICE McCULLAR J
Georgia Department of Education
Their Greatest Need: I heard
a Georgia high schobl principal—
M. S. McDonald of Moultrie—say
to three hundred Georgia home-|
making teachers, “The greatest j
need of high school students to
day is somebody to listen to their
personal problems, with under
standing and sympathy, and to
give them intelligent help withi
these problems. It is fine to give)
tests and to keep records, but,
youngsters need a listening ear,|
an emotionally mature friend, and |
some sound help in working out
their problems and finding them
selves. Too many leave school
bitter, frustrated, and unrespon
sive, and these feelings erupt and
cause trouble later on in their
lives.” (Who’s listening at your
school?)
This May Be The Year's Mosi|
Important Meeting: We just re-|
ceived a five thousand dollar
grant from the Southern Educa
tion Foundation to have a con
ference here in Georgia to study.
Minimum Foundation Programs.
The State Department of Educa
tion is inviting the state superin
tendent of schools from thirteen
southeastern states to gather in
Athens in October at the Georgia
Center, and bring with them their
Department moneymen. We’re
going to take a look at Foundation
Programs, tax structures, allot
ments, and so on and so forth,;
and see whether we can improve!
our own. The fine mind back of j
this meeting is that of Dr. R. L. i

The Professor Becomes A May
or: There are many educators in
politics in Georgia. One is Dr.
Edgar Wilson, professor at the
Walter George Law School at
Mercer. He is a member of the
Legislature, and now has been
elected Mayor of Macon. When
he was in my office the other day,
I asked him if he would have
to give up teaching when he
started to mayoring. He said
No, he would teach at least
one class, “just to keep my hand
in.”
We Welcome a New State Board
Member: Paul Stone of Waynes
boro, will be a new member of
the State Board ’of Education
when next the Board meets on
September 14. He is the fourth
State Board member that little
town has had. This’ enterprising
little community—which George
Washington visited in 1791 and
wrote about in his diary—is the
only town in Georgia that has
had four members on the State,
Board, says Dr. M. D. Collins, who
was state superintendent of
schools’ 25 years.
What Does Your Town Do
When Kids Are Hungry? I guess
i you read the headlines in the
। papers last week about My Won-
I derful Town—Atlanta, which I

। love dearly, and would rather live
( in than anywhere else in the
' whole world —having a sad case of
। a mama, 28 years old, who gave
I away her eight children when she
[ could not feed them. She went to
1 three fine agencies—the Welfare
[ Department, the Atlanta Christian
i Council, and the Salvation Army
( —for help. Red tape snarled
things up. She got no help. She
sold her furniture for $35, gave
her children away, and took a bus,
[ to get away from her problems.
Then she came back. We put her
( in jail. Is that the answer? Are
there any hungry kids in your
' (town? Are you sure? What do you
( (do with them and for them? How
t (does your school lunch feed the
(ones who have no money to pay?
( (Have you ever thought about
( I this? Have you ever been hungry,
j with nowhere to turn to get food?
( (Do you know how it feels? Did
YOU ever have hunger knawing
at your stomach and despair eat
ing at your heart? What would
YOU do?
Self-Confidence: High school
boy was working during summer
delivering groceries. Said a lady,
“What’s your name?” The boy
replied, “It’s Pat Boone.” She
'; said, “That’s a very well-known
i name around here.” “Well, it
should be,” said the lad. “I’ve
been delivering groceries here all
summer.”

Kinfolks: The election of

brother of Green county’s Super

i credited Rating? A dozen or so
(schools in Georgia went off the
accredited list this year. I know
because my office is getting out
the annual Georgia Educational
Directory. I won’t list them in this
column because I hope they’ll get
back in a hurry. But you ought to
see whether your school is one,
and if it is, what you can do to'
(help get it back on. Memo to you:

Note To High School Students:
You can now get the lovely, lilting
lines of Edna St. Vincent Millay’s
poetry for fifty cents a volume.
Her sonnets are in a red paper
back that costs fifty cents, and
her lyrics are bound in blue, same
price. Or maybe it’s vice versa.
Anyhow, get them for your own
personal bookshelf. Read and
teach your heart to dance by her
“I will be the gladdest thing
under the sun . . and “All the
good I know was taught me out
of two grey eyes a long time ago”
. . . and read and weep over the
sad and wistful, “Be to her,
Persephone, all the things I could
not be.” (This one . . . the lament
of a mother over a rebellious and
now-dead teen-age daughter, will
twist your heart in two.)
Surprise: I sat in the audience (
of Future Farmers the other day
and listened to words of advice
being given them by a prominent (
Georgia business executive. Know
what he told them was the most
important thing for them to learn?
Not how to milk a cow, nor
candle an egg, nor plough a fur
row. How to handle the English
language! Nothing, said he, will
be more important in your life
than learning how to communi
cate effectively. Nothing. It de
lighted my heart to hear.
