Tuberculosis Is
Still A Problem
By The Medical Association
of Georgia
Tuberculosis, one of the oldest
diseases of man, is often thought
of as a disease of the past. This
is so probably because great
strides have been made in the
treatment of the disease and
deaths resulting from it have
been drastically cut. But tuber
culosis is still a problem.
A new case of TB is reported
in the nation about every six
minutes and every 40 minutes a
TB sufferer dies. In Georgia about
four new cases of TB are reported
each day and a death occurs about
every 33 hours.
Tuberculosis is a contagious
disease which may occur in almost
any organ of the body, but most
frequently occurs in the lungs. It
is caused by a slender, red-shaped
bacterium, found in the sputum of
infected persons. These germs get
into the air when infected persons
sneeze, cough or spit on the
ground. They travel through the
air, are breathed in by other peo
ple and infect them. Not all the
people who breathe in these germs'

come down with TB, but some of
them do.
The reasons for this difference
are not fully understood. But it is
known that poor health habits
lower the body’s resistance to in
fection in general.
TB may occur at any age, but
it usually strikes adults rather
than children. It causes cough,
pleurisy or inflammation of the
membrane that covers the lungs
and the surfaces of the chest
cavity, fever, loss of appetite and
weight, weakness, night sweats,
and the coughing up of blood.
Elderly people with TB are be
lieved to be particularly danger
ous sources of infection because
they often may have the disease
yet appear to be in good health.
Thus they unwittingly infect their
children, grandchildren and other
associates.
TB also occurs in cattle but
protection against humans getting
TB from cattle or milk is provided
through testing cattle for the dis
ease and the pasteurization of
milk.
In man, TB is diagnosed by
several methods —the skin tests,
patch test, chest X-rays, sputum
examination or the examination
of some other body substance, and
the clinical symptoms.
The treatment of the TB patient
has improved greatly over the
years. Once the average stay of
the TB victim in a hospital or
sanitarium was two years. New
anti-TB drugs have helped bring
about a drastic shortening of the
hospital stay. In 1957 the average
stay of patients at Battey State
Hospital in Rome was 317 days—
less than a year- for the first time
in history.
Prevention is the keynote in
WHEELER COUNTY EAGLE, ALAMO, WHEELER COUNTY, GEORGIA
dealing with TB.
Doc MAG says:
1. Anything you do to remove
factors that lower natural resis
tance to infection —crowded living
conditions, fatigue, poor nutrition
—will help wipe out TB.
2. Persons with active TB
should be isolated to prevent con
tact with well persons. Every
body should have regular exami
notions to determine if he has
TB. When one person in the fam
ily is found to have TB, every
member of his family and his
close associates should be care
fully examined to determine if
they have TB or are likely to
develope it. The latter can be
i shown by a positive reaction to
some of the tests. The positive
reaction may occur when one has
been infected with TB germs, but
does not have active TB. He may
never have active TB but a per
son with a positive TB test is
more likely to come down with
active TB than one with a nega
tive TB test. Those with positive
tests should make a special effort
to guard against TB.
3. TB should be suspected when
a person has an unexplained loss
of weight, persistant fever, cough
and expectoration and cold, and
when he spits up blood. These
symptoms usually occur in the
advance stage of TB, however.
That’s why TB experts recom
mend regular checkups—to catch
the disease in its early, most
treatable stages.
Due primarily to understocked

Chevy’s done the next best thing to
paving every road in America!
First they threw out the front axle
and put in torsion-spring independent
suspension. Then they built wide-base
coil rear springs into most light-duty
models, variable-rate leaf springs into
heavies. That made it—a ride you have
to feel to believe. A ride that lets you
move faster to get more work done in
a day’s time.
Brawnier bulldozer build!
Frames are stronger, cabs 67% more
rigid. Front wheels and tires are pre
cision-balanced. And that new suspen
sion cushions jars and road shock that
used to spell slow death for the truck’s
body and sheet metal.
More comfortable cabs!
Easier to hop in and out of too. Many
models are a whole 7 inches lower out
side. Yet there’s more head room in
side, plus more width for shoulders
and hips. More real comfort!
Big in the power department!
With the industry’s most advanced gas
saving 6’s. With high-torque Workmas
ter V 8 performance in heavyweights.
W’ith new 6-cylinder or V 8 power
available in L.C.F.’s.
More models than ever!
New 4-wheel-drive models and tan
dems and high-styled Suburban Carry
alls. It’s the handsomest, hardest work
ing Chevy fleet ever to report for duty.

By H. L. DAVIS
At Tifton with an annual fertili
zation of 50 lbs. N per acre plus
150 lbs. 0-10-20, Pensacola Bahia
gave about 25 per cent more, live
weight gain of beef than Coastal
Bermuda.
With 200 lbs. N plus 600 lbs.
0-10-20, Coastal Bermuda yielded
20 per cent more than Pensacola
Bahia.
At 100 lbs. N plus 300 lbs. ts-10-
20 the yields of beef gains were
approximately equal.
These results are from 3 years
test of Pensacola Bahia reported
by Warren Marchant in the Feb
ruary 1958 issue of the Georgia
Farmer. The Coastal Bermuda re
sults are for 7 years reported by
Director Geo. H. King in the
Chilean Nitrate Farm Forum,
January 1959.
At Gainesville, Florida, in a
3-year test reported in U. of Fla.
Agr. Exp. Sta. Bulletin 581, with
an annual use of 30 lbs. N per
acre, plus minerals and lime,
Pensacola Bahia made about 30
per cent higher beef gain than
Pangola grass. With 480 lbs. N
per acre plus minerals and lime
Pangola grass gave 16 per cent
more gain than Pensacola Bahia.
At 120 lbs. N per acre the gains
were equal.
These figures are believed to
accurately reflect the reaction of
the grasses to soil fertility levels.
Adverse temperatures and
drought or excess water may
change them. Coastal Bermuda,
well fertilized is mos’t tolerant of
deep winter cold and warm season
drought, but least tolerant of wet
ness (poor drainage). Pangola
grass is most tolerant of wetness
and least of cold. Pensacola Bahia
is most tolerent of light frosts and
freezes and is intermediate in
tolerence to drought and wetness.
