Senator Talmadge Urges Stronger
Policy In Curbing Communism
“Communism must be swept
from the Western Hemisphere and
never again be allowed to return,
-declared U.S. Sen. Herman E.
Talmadge in a speech before the
212th annual meeting of the Saint
Andrew’s Society of Savannah,
just held in the seaport city.
The former Georgia governor,
who was re-elected without oppo
sition in the reCent general elec
tion to a second six-year term in
the U.S. Senate, called for a strong
foreign policy regarding commu
nistic encroachments in this hem
isphere, and a strict enforcement
of the Monroe Doctrine.
Talmadge supported President
John F. Kennedy’s firm demand
that nuclear missile bases in Cuba
be dismantled but said he re
gretted that strong action against
the communistic Castro regime
was so long in coming.

“The missiles apparently are be

of the Monroe Doctrine, the West

Issuing a stern warning against
I“a weak and vacillating foreign
policy,” especially in protecting ,

■ the Georgia junior Senator de
clared:
“Whenever we have been firm

we are going and what we are .
doing, communism has retreated.” :
■ However, he added, there have 1
been Soviet advances whenever !
' the United States has been “weak

never again be allowed to re- I

Sen. Talmadge also expressed I
concern over fiscal policies of the i
national government, citing deficit
spending “in the billions of dol
lars”, a drain on U.S. gold re
serves which is reaching "alarm- .
ing proportions”, and a national !
debt of more than S3OO-billion.
Pointing to critical rises in the
cost of living, the declining value
of the dollar and the dwindling
of gold at Fort Knox, Talmadge,
who is a member of the Senate
Finance Committee, declared:
“A pay-as-you-go government
seems to be a thing of the past.
A balanced budget apparently has
been forgotten.”

Veterans News
GI insurance policies which I
have been allowed to lapse may ।
not be re-instated under present
law with but few exceptions,
Georgia Veterans Service Director
Pete Wheeler reminded again this
week.
A bill which would have re- 1
opened the GI insurance program :
for a one-year period was given
considerable publicity recently but
! failed to pass the Congress.
The two exceptions under which
lapsed policies may still be re- i
1 instated are:
I—Veterans who have service ■
, since April 25, 1951, and have re- i
cently been ruled by the Veterans
Administration to have a service
■ connected disability have a period
of one year from the date of that
decision to obtain a special RH
policy. This special provision also
applies to members of the Na
tional Guard and the Reserves
w’ho incur service-connected dis- i
abilities during regular weeklyl
drills or during active duty per-|
iods.
2—Any policy may be re-in
stated provided the 5-year term
in which the policy was lapsed j
has not expired.

I surance policies will receive both
I aregulax and a special dividend
! during the month of January, ac
cording to a decision made last
week by the White House.
Regular dividends are normally
Ipaid on the anniversary date of
I the policy, but all such dividends
for 1963 will be paid during the
first month of the year.
Insurance dividends are paid
automatically to policy-holders
and no application is necessary.
