‘Grants If Eligible
! For the first time, Veterans
llaw has been liberalized to allow
!eligible “Cold War” veterans to
!apply for a federal grant toward
i the purchase of a specially equip
i ped automobile. The measure, ef
fective October 1, 1967 also re
!moves the time limit requirement
{for World War II and Korean
EWar veterans to apply for the
j grant.
] Specifically, veterans having
i served in the Armed Forces since
| January 21, 1955 may qualify for
ithe $1,600 allowance if they suf
lfered loss or loss of use of one
i or both hands or feet or suffered
| permanent impairment of vision
| of both eyes to the required spe
i cific degree while engaged in the
| direct performance of military
‘duty.
I Pete Wheeler, Veterans Service
iDirector, noted, “This provision
‘was excluded under terms of the
Cold War GI Bill of 1966, I was
delighted to see that when Con
gress considered this benefit for
Vietnam era veterans, .it also in
cluded Cold War veterans.”
Previous legislation allowed the
grant only for World War II and
Korean War veterans and placed
a time limit of five years follow
ing date of discharge or release
| from active duty with certain ex
| ceptions in which to apply. The
inew law gives those World War
II and Korean veterans who al
lowed their eligibility to expire
‘a new opportunity to seek the
allowance.
