Water Disposal
Systems
Jimmy James
Soil Conservationist
Today’s modern farm machin
ery cannot perform as expected
on badly eroded and gullied land.
A complete water disposal sys
tem is needed on sloping land to
prevent erosion and to permit the
most efficient use of today’s lar
ger tractors.
A water disposal system con
]sists of grassed waterways and
parallel terraces. Parallel ter-
WHEELER COUNTY EAGLE. ALAMO, WHEELER COUNTY. GEORGIA
races are designed to slow the
water down, allowing it to soak
into the soil. That rainwater
which does not soak into the [
soil slowly runs along the ter-]
race channel to the grassed wa- ■
terway. The waterway being sod- ]
ded with grass allows the water i
to move out of the field without j
creating gullies and removing top 1
soil.
Parallel terraces are parallel to:
each other, preventing short rows
and also prevent crossing the!
terraces themselves since all farm-:
ing operations are on the contour.'
Cost-sharing is available to]
Wheeler County landowners on a
(70-30% basis through the Agri-]
] cultural Conservation Program.
: The initial sign-up period runs
I through January 1. Contact me
।at the County Administration ]
Building if I can be of assistance. (
Fishponds
Jimmy James
Soil Conservationist
A pond that provides good fish-,
ing is a worthwhile investment i
and the beauty spot of any farm, j
Any pond intended primarily for;
fishing also may provide other:
I recreation benefits such as boat- ]
] ing, swimming, picnicing and |
I water for wildlife. Water for live-1
stock and irrigation are also |
stored for ready use.
Most ponds will produce some]
! fishing. Fish biologists tell us that j
. ponds properly constructed and ]
managed will produce 4 times I
more fish than those not con-1
। structed and managed properly, i
; Field crops receive lime and}
fertilizer as recommended. Ponds j
need lime and fertilizer in the (
spring and summer for the same]
। reasons that crops need them. An-:
; ( other major mistake made by ]
, some landowners is to over-fish :
one species of fish while under-1
. fishing another species.
I The Tri-County Resource Con-]
• servation and development proj-j
ect has a full-time game and fish]
biologist to help landowners man- j
age their game and fish. If you:
aren’t satisfied with your fish-|
pond, contact me and we will be
glad to assist you.
Sign-up this month for cost-.
- sharing on construction of fish I
1 and wildlife and multi-purpose
. ponds.

] freezer bag, says Miss M argie

the Cooperative Extension Serv-
I ice. In case of a ducking, money
' and papers will be unharmed.
